A Severe Case of Cannes Envy
This week I discovered Google Reader (check it out – it's brilliant) and configured it to bring me instant updates on several different Cannes-related movie blogs. This may have been a mistake because a) I wasted almost the entire weekend reading Cannes coverage and b) I now have a severe case of Cannes Envy. Apart from the world premiere of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the new film by Woody Allen (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) looks really good and I desperately want to see Waltz With Bashir (check out the website and one of the stunning trailers below) as that seems to be the film everyone's talking about. On the plus side, at least two of the Cannes films I want to see (Brad Anderson's Transsiberian and Duane Hopkins' Better Things) will be at the Edinburgh Film Festival in June and I will be covering it for our newly launched ViewEdinburgh site. Can't wait.

Films I'm Looking Forward To: Igor
Last week I was trawling for X-Files trailers and I came across the trailer for Igor, the animated tale of a mad scientist's assistant who strikes out on his own. It's no WALL-E, obviously, but with voices by John Cusack, Steve Buscemi and Eddie Izzard, it looks like it might be a lot of fun. Pull ze switch!

Top 10 Films On Release This Week (as recommended by me):

Lots of changes this week, with both drop-offs and new entries. Also, There Will Be Blood (my favourite film of the year so far) has just started a run at the Prince Charles, so it's well worth catching it on the big screen if you haven't seen it yet.

1. There Will Be Blood
2. Persepolis
3. Iron Man
4. Charlie Bartlett
5. Caramel
6. Shotgun Stories
7. The Orphanage
8. XXY
9. Happy-Go-Lucky
10. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

DVD of the Week: Sweeney Todd (two disc Special Edition DVD, out now, RRP £22.99)

This week's DVD of the Week is Tim Burton's bloodthirsty musical Sweeney Todd, which gets the two disc Special Edition treatment. For my money, this is Burton's best film since Ed Wood and easily one of the best films of the year. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are perfectly cast and it even has a relatively low Spallness Factor. The extras include several different featurettes and documentaries on everything from the casting of the film to Sondheim's music and theatrical traditions in Victorian London. No commentary though and frankly, I don't think you should be allowed to call a DVD release a Special Edition if there's no commentary.
