Bars to Watch Football

Ahh football season. It turns the quietest of us into emotionally charged crazy people. Screeching at the TV when a penalty goes the other way, swearing at the ref, and cheering at the top of your voice when that all important goal goes in. Good times. The extreme highs and painful lows are enough to test even the hardiest fan. How many times have you decided that that’s it, no more football for you. Only to head on down to the pub the next time a game’s on… Yeah, me too. I won’t tell you who I support as I don’t want to alienate any of you, I’ll just say it’s been a painful few weeks being a fan.

Still, whether you’re merrily cheering on the blues or praying that Spurs can crawl their way up the table, what better way to celebrate or commiserate then adding an interesting skew to your viewing pleasure. I don’t know about you, but I’m a little fed up with traditional pubs that show football. I want unusual bars to watch football. How about a 5* hotel, a trendy bar or even a cinema? Yes, I’m serious!

Well it’s not all just a figment of my over-indulgent imagination, there really are more unusual bars to watch football. The stunning 5* Andaz Hotel near Liverpool Street may seem like an unlikely place to show a match, but their very own pub The George regularly screens football games. Yes, it’s a traditional pub, but with the finery of the hotel lending its aura, there are few pubs that are as attractive an option for watching the game.

If you’re a trendsetting skinny jeans wearer then Shoreditch bar Juno also screens regular football games on large projection screens in their downstairs space. I’d love it – cheering at the TV with a White Russian instead of the usual pint of Bulmers. Brilliant.

However, the pierce de resistance must be watching the big game on the biggest screen of them all – a cinema screen! Oh yes. Now this really appeals to me. At Roxy Bar and Screen, all the matches are shown on a 4 metre HD screen so you don’t miss a second of the all-important action. Best of all, they show all the World Cup qualifiers, Champions League games and selected Premiership games (the Manchester derby followed by Arsenal vs Chelsea on Sunday, anyone?).

Who said you have to rough it? Now, after me: “REF!!”
