Turnmills is Dead, Long Live Ministry!

You’ll know by now that our dearly beloved Turnmills has passed away. You only have to see my past blogs (The End is Nigh for Turnmills and Your Last Chance for Turnmills – Ever! ) to feel my pain. It was a sad time in all our lives, but now I feel the mourning needs to end and we need to beckon in a new dawn. A happy time of dancing and smiles. A time when The Gallery is reborn!
Yes, that’s right. Turnmills may be gone and forgotten (us Londoners are a fickle lot, after all), but its best club nights are not. And the king of these nights is The Gallery. Of …

Panda Hats and Fancy Dress

I have to admit to not being particularly au fait with the underground music scene – the closest I come is listening to buskers on the tube. However, recently, thanks to some gigs and my forays into Camden and Shoreditch, I’m starting to develop a love of unsigned bands and underground sounds.
However, even if I hadn’t developed this new-found respect for gigging, Fonda 500 would appeal. For this is as unusual a band as you’ll have ever seen, hailing from Hull. Picture the scene: a man donning a panda hat dances around on stage with a band – in fancy dress. Really. With a sound described as Nu Pop Nonsense (I’m not sure what that means, either, but let’s go with it) their psychedelic indie pop sound is starting to appeal to ‘in the know’ Londoners. …

West End Rocks Out

Although I don’t get to go as often as I’d like, I do have a bit of a soft spot for musicals. After getting a little too excited about Jason Donovan in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (first celebrity crush, you see) I didn’t think musicals could get much better – until I saw Hairspray, natch.
So imagine my excitement when I heard on the grapevine that two of my biggest passions – musicals and Soho – were coming together, and all for charity (thus annulling any feelings of guilt for hitting the town – again). West End Rocks, in aid of Theatrecares, is hitting Soho institution Madame JoJos for a charity gig. What is it? Why only some of the biggest West End musical stars …

Hot to Trot

I have to admit that I watched Girls Aloud’s latest reality show – The Passions of Girls Aloud – with interest. OK, I slobbed out on rare nights in and was glued to the TV. My favourite episode? Cheryl Cole’s streetdancing. It was pretty impressive to watch and it looked kinda painful, but then anyone’s who’s danced until 6am in stilettos will know that sometimes we have to suffer for a boogy.
I was therefore really excited to hear about Streetdance night at Sadler’s Wells on Friday 25th April. If you’ve ever watched a Justin Timberlake or Britney Spears (pre-breakdown, naturally!) video and wished you could bust a move on the dancefloor with their finesse and sex appeal …

Who Needs Glaston-muddy?

Well, well, well – now THAT’S a turn up for the old books, eh? Now, I don’t want to be accused of being a snob, it’s just that wallowing in a mud bath isn’t really my idea of good times. Neither are tents (I blame my parents and those ‘family bonding’ holidays with campsite showers filled with spiders the size of my face). So when we were bopping away to the radio in the ViewLondon office yesterday and heard reports that Glastonbury has thousands of tickets still for sale, we weren’t overly surprised. OK, so we’re kinda biased, but London festivals are where it’s all at this year. Oh yes.
I’m going to admit something to you now. This time last year I was a festival virgin. Yes, yes, I know – rubbish. So it was with Lovebox that my love …
