Do You Measure Up?

Ahh alcohol. Us Brits are known as a nation of drinkers – although we bring a lot of money into countries through tourism, people kinda dread our lairy, lager loutish behaviour pouring into their small towns and cities.

On the flipside, we’re fast becoming aware of health issues – the diet industry is booming and even McDonalds is starting to post calorie content on the sides of their chips, burgers and sodas… As depressing as that is – I don't need to know just how fattening a Big Mac is thank you very much. Well it was only a matter of time before bars and pubs followed suit as they continue to come under fire and be blamed for fueling Britain’s binge drinking culture (but damn you’ve gotta love those happy hours!).

And so it is that the ‘Know Your Limits’ campaign has made a major breakthrough as the Market Place – a popular Central London bar – have decided to take a health-aware approach to selling alcohol. Starting today and running until Friday 13th, the Market Place is launching Measure Up, whereby every glass or bottle of alcohol will come complete with a sticker outlining the number of units in the drink. Customers will also be asked how much alcohol they want rather than, as at many bars, just doubling it up.

So do you know your limits? I know that I still get confused as to what’s recommended… The Department of Health advises that men shouldn’t regularly drink more than 3-4 units a day and women 2-3 units. That equates to a glass of wine for the girls or 1-2 pints for the guys – yup, not much, eh?

That’s not to say that you can’t go out on the occasional bender (within limits, nobody wants to see the contents of your stomach – least of all, you!) or kick back on a Friday evening with a couple of glasses of wine. It’s just trying to raise awareness about what we put into our bodies.

Maybe that fifth glass of wine isn't such a good idea...
