Eastern Electrics Versus the Notting Hill Carnival: Let Battle Commence

Is West best? Most Londoners have a preference as to whether they prefer the upmarket moneyed side of the immaculately turned out West London or the down-at-heel, trendy East. More often that not people tend to indulge in both depending on the occasion and mood, but I think most people’s hearts lie one way or the other. Yeah, yeah, sorry North and South Londoners, I haven’t forgotten you, you just didn’t fit into the tidy pigeonhole of this blog!

I have to admit to enjoying a good night out in the West – I’m a fan of Kensington Roof Gardens and anyone who’s ever been to the incredible pizza place Hell in Fulham will know why I'm a fan. Yes, going to Hell has never been so fun. However, at heart I'm an East London girl. Having grown up and lived in the East most of my life I can’t help but be loyal to it... Plus with Team GB kicking butt at the Olympics I’m more excited than ever about it coming to Stratford.

With this in mind, the impossible question of what to do this Bank Holiday weekend becomes all the more pertinent. This year two huge festivals go head-to-head as the iconic Notting Hill Carnival faces off against the newborn Shoreditch festival Eastern Electrics...

On the one hand, you have the Caribbean flavour and glamour of the carnival. Notting Hill is going to be a veritable hotbed of steel drums, incredible DJs (hello Norman Jay!) and huge processions. On the other you have the very heart of East London dishing out its unique brand of cutting edge sounds from such DJs as Hannah Holland, Disco Bloodbath DJs and the Pure Filth DJs in an outdoor AND indoor space. Already I like the sound of that as it’s sure to rain at the weekend!

To be honest, I’m totally torn. Also bear in mind that I need to squeeze in SW4, Get Loaded and the Pure Pacha launch you’ll see that it’s a case of so much to do, so little time. Mind you, I can think of worse quandaries to be in!

Luckily both these events take place over the weekend, so you can always go to one on one day and the other the next. They don’t call me a genius for nothing. OK, they don’t call me a genius at all...
