Subject: Clubs

London has always been at the forefront of the music industry. So I wasn’t surprised to read recently that the capital dominated the NME future cool music list, which states which acts are dominating and leading the music industry.

Of the top 20 names listed, five of them were from our own fair city. Bonkers singer Dizzee Rascal from East London’s Bow (just down the road from me, in fact) made an appearance in the top five, slipping in at the number four spot. Meanwhile, cutting edge band The XX from Putney slammed into number six. Shoreditch singing queen Little Boots was number nine and my personal favourite La Roux just made it into the top 10. Finally, indie band The Big Pink – also from East London – came in at number 20.

Whilst I’ve always rated London clubs – and indeed festivals – for putting the capital on the world music map, it’s good to know that out bands and acts are also doing their bit for London’s musical influence. Also, as an East London girl myself, I was happy to see that many of the acts hail from the area. Although it’s little surprise given the influence of Shoreditch clubs and bars on the capital’s nightlife scene.

Who knew London was so cool? Well, I did, actually…

I have just returned from travelling the world for 6 months, and the awesomeness of the London music scene stretches far wider than I ever thought it did. I found myself listening to Little Boots on the radio in Wellington, New Zealand, dancing to Dizzee on the beach in Thailand, and even getting my groove on (oh yes, i have a groove and it is ON) to La Roux at a bar in Brisbane. Being away from the city and meeting other people, you get a worldwide view of London from the people you meet, and the majority of the conversations always came back to how awesome the music scene is in our city, and how many fantastic artists come out of the big smoke. Boy was I proud to be a Londoner.
