I admit that, on occasion (usually when I’m ill at home so perhaps a little delirious), I watch antiques shows. And I like the theme tune to the Antiques Roadshow. Come on, hum it – you know you want to.
What I really love about these shows is when your Average Joes come on having found an old dusty heirloom in their garage, only to discover it’s worth insane amounts of money. Awesome. I don’t think my collection of IKEA furniture counts, unfortunately...
This was taken to a whole new level recently when – get this – one of Jimi Hendrix’s old guitars was discovered in a garage in Hove. Seriously. Oh, it gets better. This guitar is iconic. When Jimi Hendrix came to London in 1967 to open his Walker Brothers Tour, he played a gig at the Finsbury Astoria. Determined to make a big impact, at the end of his set his Fender Stratocaster alight – with flames and everything – putting the Rolling Stones lighting up a cigarette on stage at the O2 to shame. However, the story doesn’t end there. Whilst Hendrix was rushed to hospital to treat burns on his hand (so rock and roll), groupies retrieved the guitar and returned it to the London office of his press officer Tony Garland. Garland took it and stored it in his parent’s garage in Hove (as you do), only for it to be discovered by his nephew in 2007. Now that’s a find only dreams are made of!

The guitar is still fully intact – complete with burn marks. Best of all, it’s due to go under the hammer (not literally, that would be insane!) at an auction hosted by the Fame Bureau. Other sale items will include: the last surviving drum kit of Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham; Jim Morrison’s final notebook of poetry and musings before his death; and a song sheet from Band Aid’s We Are the World, signed by such stars as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan. So no pots and pans then.
However, if you’re fantasising about owning Hendrix’s guitar then you’ll have to dig deep. It’s expected to reach one million dollars - let’s face it, it’ll probably be more. That’s a lot of pennies...
It’s back to Guitar Hero for me, then.
