London Gets Sexy As The SATC Girls Arrive

This week our Guy About Town hits the red carpet at the Sex and the City world premiere and brings us all the gossip from the glamorous side of London’s clubland. Expect Z-listers, top clubs and hedonistic events – it’s all just another week in the life of John Gough! Take it away, John…

The world had its eyes firmly planted on London this week as we played host to the world premiere of Sex And The City: The Movie, and yes, that’s right – guess who blagged himself a ticket?! I was itching to see SJP’s outfit, but it turned out to be Cynthia Nixon who stole my attention. I loved her midnight blue cleavage-revealing number. However, I heard one whisper after another of “What is that? She’s wearing a plant pot on her head!” as I made my way down the red carpet behind SJP and her Philip Treacy creation! I made a male fashion statement by going dressed in full pirate regalia, including a skull and crossbones headscarf. I didn’t bank on the big black Johnny Depp-esque boots getting stuck on my feet later that night though, I had to cut myself out of them in the end!

Celebrity Spots
You know, when I’m out and about, I like to think of myself as something of a social anthropologist. I study the different breeds that haunt London’s clubland with some interest – there’s the sweaty, ageing lotharios with open-neck shirts hanging around the bar at Annabels, the glamour girls who confuse swimwear with nightwear when they hit up Embassy London, and the Sloaney trustafarians dancing the night away at Mo*vida with Daddy’s credit card.

However, one of the more interesting breeds is what I call the “celebrity offspring”, the individuals who got a head start because Mummy or Daddy used to be in a band, or play football, or was born into a titled family. Two of the big guns in this category were out when I checked out Amika last Friday – the surprisingly pretty Princess Beatrice and hardy partygoer Jade Jagger. However, those encounters paled into insignificance when I compare them to the number of times I’ve spotted Calum Best this last week: I saw him in Dolce pulling raffle tickets for the Against Breast Cancer charity night and Studio Valbonne wearing a vest to show off his new tattoos and tan fresh from his jaunt to Marbella. When I bumped into him at Mo*vida too, I asked if he would just stop following me around. I don’t need a stalker!

Top Club
I’m loving Amika on Kensington High Street right now. Fresh from welcoming Pete Doherty and Babyshambles last night, tonight Benji Madden from Good Charlotte is taking to the decks for a DJ set. You know what that means, right? Yes boys, Amika has got Paris Hilton hosting! The gorgeous socialite is following her man around on tour in between attending Cannes film festival next week and launching her new perfume Can Can. I love the crowd at Amika, it’s young and up for it, so get yourself down there tonight and mingle with the A-List. And, er, me.

Top Bar
There’s a great little bar on Brewer Street that I just can’t keep away from – The Enclave, run by Aussie entrepreneur Chris Theodoridis. I mainly keep going back for the too-cute bar staff and the Black Orchid cocktails. I can close my eyes and taste one now they’re so good - they’re made with pernod, cointreau and brandy, so expect your head to pound the day after! However, there’s more than hotties and alcohol that keep me coming back here – there’s a great night called Subterane every second and last Saturday of the month with DJ Jonesy playing really banging commercial dance music. I got so excited by the top tunes the first time I went that I found myself dashing downstairs to spin around on the dancefloor by myself before anyone else could get there! (That’s what one too many of those Black Orchids does to me…).

The Big News
It’s about time something different came to London nightlife – as much as I love it, there are times I look around and ask myself drunkenly “What club am I in? What night is it?” Yes yes, things sometimes get a bit predictable. So, in preparation for the Big Bank Holiday weekend, No 5 Cavendish Square have teamed up with Thailand Moon Parties on Sunday 25th May to bring us a flavour of Koh Phangan with the capital’s first Full Moon Party – you can expect UV paints, bikinis and cortex statues to complete the vibe. I’m really excited about it, I’m gonna get myself down there and experience it for myself so if you want to join me, head over and get your glowsticks out! Check out our own No 5 guestlists.

My Top 5 This Week
Ok pop pickers, here’s this week’s chart…

1. PUNK
This is a non-mover at the top with PUNK remaining my favourite this week. The fashion crowd (that’s me, ok?) flock here on Friday nights for Bangers and Mash.
2. Dolce
Hosting Jay Sean’s single and Paris Hilton’s perfume launches this week is proof that London’s first 6-star club puts on a great party. I love the tacky waterfalls!
3. funkybuddha
Girls, if you’re a wannabe WAG, then Tuesdays and Saturdays at Funky Buddha are the nights to bag yourself a football player.
4. No 5
Another Friday favourite, I love the glamour, A-List crowd and funky tunes at No 5.
5. Volstead
After the success of their Shhh! Disco last Thursday (revellers were handed MP3 players and earphones to choose their own tunes), Volstead has caught my attention again after hosting the launch of Fall Out Boy’s new CD last night.

What in the world possessed you to dress like a pirate?! And where can I see pictures?
by  john gough  16/05/2008 @ 16:40
Hahaha, I wanted to wear something different to all the boring suits that us fellas get relegated to... and a throwback to Jean Paul Gaultier Spring/Summer '07 Pirate Chic seemed the way to stand out!
As for pictures... they're for very privileged eyes only I'm afraid ;-)
