Konpai! (That’s Cheers to You and Me)

Subject: Pubs & Bars

Anyone who regularly reads my blogs (if not, why not hmm?) will know I recently acquired a taste for Sake (see Just For The Sake Of It). Now prior to this tasting I figured Sake was that horrible cheap stuff that burns the throat, but not so! It’s actually rather nice – especially the sparkling Sake, but then I am a fan of Champers!

So I was really excited to hear that a Sake and Japanese food masterclass is due to be held on Thursday 31st July Sake, hosted by Akashi-tai Sake Brewery at Bincho Yakitori Soho. Ahh my two passions – Sake and sushi.

For £45 per person, …

Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum!

Posted by: Kelly Hussey 22/07/2008 @ 09:52
Subject: Pubs & Bars

When it’s raining and grey outside there’s nothing I like more than having a sip of rum and wishing myself far away on some Caribbean island. Ahh, I can picture it now, sun, sea and um... Ahem, enough of that!

If you’re finding our bizarre summer draining then I have an event to cheer you up. On 25th and 26th October RumFest is in town – yes it really is as cool as it sounds. I was lucky enough to be invited on a little Monday afternoon boat trip down the Thames this week to sample a small taste of what they have to offer. A few hours, several cocktails and a rather painful hangover (in the afternoon, its tough being a bar reviewer!) later I was more than convinced that this is a great idea. And with incredible Caribbean food supplied by Cottons …

Hendrix Guitar Goes Under The Hammer (Not Literally!)

I admit that, on occasion (usually when I’m ill at home so perhaps a little delirious), I watch antiques shows. And I like the theme tune to the Antiques Roadshow. Come on, hum it – you know you want to.

What I really love about these shows is when your Average Joes come on having found an old dusty heirloom in their garage, only to discover it’s worth insane amounts of money. Awesome. I don’t think my collection of IKEA furniture counts, unfortunately...

This was taken to a whole new level recently when – get this – one of Jimi Hendrix’s old guitars was discovered in a garage in Hove. Seriously. Oh, it gets better. This guitar is iconic. When Jimi Hendrix came to London in 1967 to open his Walker Brothers Tour, he played …

Happy Birthday Mother Bar

Posted by: Kelly Hussey 11/07/2008 @ 12:50
Subject: Pubs & Bars

It’s a big weekend this weekend for the ever popular and oh so painfully trendy Mother Bar, as the old favourite turns nine years old. I just couldn’t let such a momentous occasion go by unnoticed, so wanted to take the opportunity to wish Mother a very happy birthday from the View London office.

The Old Street bar has always been known for a rather debauched approach to partying it up Old Street style, ah if only the walls could talk. To help them celebrate in a style that regulars have come to expect from Mother a huge line up is planned for Sunday 13th July. So far DJs Benjamin, Farah and Prince Nelly, Hero and Solaris 100 are all lined up to hit the …

A Celebration of All Things Sinful

Posted by: Kelly Hussey 10/07/2008 @ 16:11
Subject: Pubs & Bars

Any Londoner who regularly heads over to Oxford Circus will know the megaphone-laden dude who used to lecture on the streets about finding religion, shouting ‘Are you a sinner or a winner?’ and chastising shoppers for, well, shopping. He even made it into the papers after being slapped with a police order to stop being so irritating.

Of course, lots of people would exclaim, ‘I’m a sinner baby!’ in true lairy Londoner style. And so, it’s little surprise that one venue – the famed Purple Turtle in Camden – is now holding a bi-monthly mini festival called the Festival of Sins, actually celebrating the seven deadly sins.

Fashion shows, fetish …
