Movie News: Four Random Things
1. First, some superhero news. It seems the Green Lantern movie is indeed going ahead and will start shooting in Australia in September. At least that leaves them plenty of time to find a star. DC are apparently desperate to get another franchise off the ground (Batman's obviously a bit lonely) and it looks like this might be their first shot. It has a great director on board, anyway, but it remains to be seen if they'll go with the version of the script that was reviewed here.

2. Second, even more superhero news, this time involving Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2. According to Iron Man director Jon Favreau's Twitter feed, Scarlett Johansson has started work on Iron Man 2, which means we can only be weeks away from the first pictures of her in the Black Widow costume. I have to say, I really can't WAIT for Iron Man 2. Hurry up, Favreau!

3. There's still no UK release date for Brick director Rian Johnson's excellent con man flick The Brothers Bloom but it was nice to see this unofficial poster for the movie surface on the official blog for the film. Apparently the poster was created by the director's cousin. For comparison's sake, an official poster can be seen on the film's website here.

4. And finally, I won't be going to Cannes this year, but I'm looking forward to next week's announcement of the 2009 line-up. In the meantime, there's this article by Variety's Todd McCarthy, which gives some idea of the probable contenders.

Films I'm Looking Forward To: Moon
I've been looking forward to this ever since I saw a set report on it on Film 2009 about six months ago (and spotted someone I know in the background). Sam Rockwell's always been one of my favourite actors (check out Lawn Dogs if you've never seen it) and this looks like the perfect part for him. Something I hadn't realised before I saw the trailer was that Kevin Spacey was voicing the ship's computer (GERTY) and he seems to be doing it in the style of 2001's HAL, which pleases me enormously (I have HAL's “Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?” as the noise my laptop makes when it shuts down). Anyway, the film looks amazing and the plot has the potential for a great sci-fi movie. It doesn't appear to have a UK release date yet, so watch this space.

Top 10 Films On Release This Week (as recommended by me):
Only two new entries this week, with laugh-out-loud comedy 'bro-mance” I Love You, Man (much better than the mediocre trailer would have you believe) and British comedy In The Loop (a spin-off of TV's The Thick of It) both making it into the top ten and the criminally little-seen Cherry Blossoms disappearing without trace. Did anyone see it? Please leave a comment if you did. Also, fans of In The Loop / The Thick of It might like to know that characters Malcolm Tucker and Jamie MacDonald both have Twitter accounts and provide several amusingly sweary comments on a daily basis.

1. Let the Right One In
2. Watchmen
3. Slumdog Millionaire
4. The Class
5. I Love You, Man
6. The Damned United
7. Genova
8. Monsters vs Aliens
9. In The Loop
10. Religulous

DVD of the Week: The Baader Meinhof Complex (released 20th April, RRP £17.99)
This week's DVD of the Week is The Baader Meinhof Complex, an impressively directed and superbly written German drama about the rise and fall of the Red Army Faction in 1970s Germany. An engaging, provocative and thoroughly gripping thriller, it also features terrific performances from two of Germany's biggest stars: Moritz Bleibtreu as Andreas Baader and Martina Gedeck as Ulrike Meinhof. (You can read our interviews with the stars here.)  The extras include filmographies, a trailer, a decent Making Of documentary and two featurettes on director Uli Edel.
