The Marquee Club Closes for Good

We were wandering along St Martin’s Lane yesterday when we happened across The Marquee Club – a piece of clubbing history, this club has had a home in the capital across various locations since 1958. In September it came to Covent Garden – much to our delight as it was a mere 5 minute walk from the office. So imagine our dismay when we saw our beloved club plastered in notices explaining how it had been forced to close for good due to a demolition order on the building - on the eve of its 50th anniversary.
Wiping away a tear (OK, we blubbed) we immediately investigated when we returned to the office this morning and discovered that yes, the club had indeed shut and is now going all ‘virtual’. Well, as an internet company we’re always intrigued by the latest developments in modern technology. Now, rather than being based at one central venue, they’ll be holding Marquee gigs at various secret locations across London. It certainly made us less miserable this Monday morning to find that the Marquee, like the phoenix, was rising up out of the flames of its destruction to live again.
We were also excited to hear that they’ll be putting out a 50th Anniversary Album with music from many of the legendary artists who have performed there over the years. Well, we have our iPods at the ready and you’ll soon see us bopping our way around Covent Garden Marquee Club style!

With huge acts like The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and The Who having walked the stage at the various locations of the Marquee Club over the years, we’re absolutely certain that the many gigs that are upcoming will contain the talents and rock gods of the future. Keep your eyes peeled for more info and we’ll let you know as and when we hear about where these gigs will be.
Keep rocking Marquee Club – gone but not forgotten, it will live again.

It's no great loss. The Marquee Club in Wardour Street was the one worthy of tear-shedding. That place had a REAL musical pedigree, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Jam, The Buzzcocks, Joy Division....
They pulled it down and built a restaurant, so let's not lament this pale and incredibly shortlived modern incarnation.

I've been there and I can tell you it had absolutely nothing to do with the real Marquee on Wardour Street (also Charing X was not bad actually) where I used to regularly go when in London; When I saw a band playing in that small dark canteen in the basemen through a pocket sized PA and only two or three people in the audience (it couldn't fit many more than that!!), I could not believe someone dared to give to such a squallid pointless place the name of the most significant venue ever existed. The original Marquee was THE CLUB and they should have preserved it as a piece of history. Shamefully erased forever.
