Who Needs Wine When You Can Have Beer?

Ooh, yes we’re getting an aroma of oaks and dark woods with a hint of spice coming through... Oh God, that will be another example of us trying to look all knowledgeable on wines. Swirling the glass around, dipping in our noses and inhaling before rambling off some mumbo jumbo and hoping to sound good. Everyone nods in agreement, we give ourselves a pat on the back and then head on to drink the whole bottle until it’s all we can do to speak, let alone chat nonsense.

OK, so we do know our stuff when it comes to wine. When you go to as many bars and restaurants as we do, you start to learn and know what’s good and what’s not. But, for many, the question of wine is a confusing one - and one that can cause all sorts of headaches (and we’re not just talking the hangover!).

That’s why we’re really excited about a move by some bars and restaurants into a new type of menu matching. Beer matching. Now that sounds like total genius to us!

It came about when we heard that popular bar Bierodrome in Islington was offering a beer tasting menu (we know, we know, unsurprising considering their name!). They do decent Belgian grub and, rather than doing as many similar establishments do, they’re sticking to their pub roots and offering a beer matching service. For every course, they suggest a different beer to complement and best bring out the flavours in the food - something that sommeliers have been doing with wine for many years. This is perfect for those who don’t enjoy wine but don’t wish to appear ignorant on a night out.

But now restaurants are getting in on the action, too. Michelin starred Le Gavroche and Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons have both decided to offer this service to their patrons, and, most recently, Pearl Restaurant and Bar have decided to offer beer matching with their menu.

Imagine the scene. You turn up to the glittering Pearl, everything is sparkling and you’re shown to your table by a super-efficient member of staff. Then out comes seven courses of tantalising food to get the tastebuds working overdrive. From langoustine starters to honey glazed vegetables and crispy pork, it’s everything you could ask for from a posh meal. But then something different happens – rather than wine, beer arrives at the table. Interesting. We’re not talking pints here, you’d be pissed out your head if you had too many of those bad boys. Nope, a bottle to share between two for each course, presented in a beautiful wine glass. With beer gourmand Gustavo Bertolucci devising the matches, even if you’re not a beer drinker, you’ll enjoy the sparkling wine-like L’Aiguille Blanche Wheat Beer, and ale connoisseurs will appreciate the dark, powerful taste of the Boags St George. Hell, they even have chocolate beer. Mmm chocolate beer – drool.

Yup, looks like there’s a revolution on the way guys and gals. And it comes in the form of a cool, glistening beer. Let’s silence all those poncey wine types and lead the way with beers with dinner. Whether it’s at your local gastropub or posh restaurant, you no longer have to feel awkward about not liking wine.

Ours is a pint, please.

There's nothing wrong with beer at dinner as long as the beer is good. And sadly, unlike on the continent, a lot of beers aren't fresh, they are horrid bottled things that taste of nothing but Marmite or sweaty feet. Yeuch. Just about the only place you can get good beers these days are at the beer festivals when the smaller brewers bring their casks in and everything is on tap.

I don't know anything about wine, no matter how hard i try and learn, it never goes in, but beer, I reckon I'm better at pretending I know what I'm talking about so this beer matching idea is good in my books.

I must admit that a beer is delicious with a meal, and I tried out the Pearl beer matching service and it was an interesting experience, but nothing quite lives up to an exquisite wine that fits with the flavours of a dish perfectly. Call is snobbery if you like, but its true.
