The 9th Discovering Latin America Film Festival kicks off in London in a huge showcase of Latin cinema, offering filmgoers in the capital the chance to explore a diverse range of films from the heart of Latin America. Returning to the capital for the 9th year the DLA Film Festival is a prominent showcase of Latin culture, presenting feature films, shorts and documentaries. Film fans can see a unique collection of works in London and find out what’s new in the world of Latin cinema.
DLA Film Festival venues
Cinemas that are screening films for the festival are the Odeon Covent Garden and Panton Street in the West End, Tate Modern on the South Bank, Shortwave Films on Bermondsey Square, Birkbeck Cinema and Birckbeck Collge. Londoners can go for vibrant trips to the movies throughout the capital.
New for 2010
Fanatic film buffs, casual movie-goers and everyone in between will find something new and different at the DLA Film Festival this year. Films from a number of Latin American countries and filmmakers are being showcased, some of which will be enjoying UK and London premieres. Highlights include the UK premiere of Tear This Heart Out from Roberto Sneider; the award winning Argentine feature The Secret in their Eyes; and the Brazilian documentary Only When I Dance.
Films from across the continent
Other film highlights at the 2010 Discovering Latin America Film Festival include Brother and Sister from Argentine producer Daniel Burman, Children of the Amazon from Brazil, and several shorts from Mexico. The festival also featured several gala nights, and the chance to hear from various Latin American filmmakers, writers and critics, including the Woody Allen of Argentina, Daniel Burman, so you can be sure of another good mix again this year.
Special events
A selection of special events are taking place at the DLA Film Festival, including panels, retrospectives, interviews and Q&A sessions. One of the highlights is the chance to meet Argentine director Daniel Burman, whose film Brother and Sister is screening as part of the festival. Budding Latin America film fans can dive deeper into the culture with a series of Q&A sessions, and there are also masterclasses, shorts, animation showcases and much, much more.
Films for charity
Discovering Latin America is a charity organisation featuring volunteers from over 20 countries, aiming to promote Latin American culture on a global scale whilst helping to raise funds for regional development projects. Proceeds from the Discovering Latin America Film Festival 2010 will go to the Salvadorian Children Earthquake Trust, which helps children and young people in need of long term rehabilitation in El Salvador and other earthquake stricken countries.
The Discovering Latin America Film Festival takes place at the Odeon Covent Garden and Panton Street, the ICA, Tate Modern, Shortwave Films, University College London and London South Bank Universtiy.
