Locations across East London
It’s brought us jellied eels, cockney rhyming slang and a very long-running soap, and now the East End Film Festival gives you one more East London tradition that you should be grateful for. Gearing up its reels for a 10th year of films, films and more films in 2011, there's also some special cinema events that will have you partying it up, East London style, throughout the festival.
The grand opening
Taking place at the Troxy, the opening night gala of the East End Film Festival kicks off with the world premiere of The Libertines - There Are No Innocent Bystanders, an all access documentary about the recently reunited band. This debut feature by acclaimed photographer and journalist Roger Sargent takes a closer look at the relationships and mythology of one of the most controversial bands of recent times, as they prepare to perform at the Reading and Leeds festivals.
Feature flicks
Film junkies shouldn’t miss out on the series of East End Film Festival feature screenings, which include work from right here in the East End to all over the globe. You can expect to see great films like an uncut version of Ken Russell's The Devils, a digitally restored edition of Martin Scorses's Taxi Driver, and The Furious Force of Rhymes, a documentary film which follows the artistic impact of hip hop across the globe.
Short shorts
Attention span not up to scratch? Lucky for you, the festival is also screening plenty of shorts, from silly animations to thought provoking documentaries and films from Bangladesh. Each film is tidily wrapped up in as short a time as possible, perfect for busy Londoners… or if you have to run to the loo.
Music and film
If you feel like dancing, there will be plenty of live performances from sound system celebrations to a live acoustic set from the Guillemots to keep you entertained throughout the festival too. The varied events programme also includes an exhibition of East End communities by Phil Maxwell, heritage trails, and a full on cinematic invasion on Movie MayDay.
Special evenings
Also on the programme of events at the East End film festival is a special collaboration with Camden Crawl featuring Bob Stanley of St Etienne. And for fans of silent cinema, there's a free screening of the 1925 Romanian silent film Manasse at Spitalfields Market. The Water Poet is also joining in with all the fun with a day of film screenings and live entertainment on the day of the royal wedding.
