Worst club in London. Pretends to be members only yet everyone gets in if they pay the outrageous cover charge. The decor goes hand in hand with the cheapness of the women in attendance. The music is like being stuck in a car full of trey songz wannabes. We suspect there must be a whore ring operating in the premises as most of the ladies seemed very pay as you go. Avoid like the plague.
To be honest, Alto doesn't even deserve 1 star. I am currently contemplating whether I just had a long nightmare, or whether I actually did go to Alto. Firstly, the people that seem to think its difficult to get in need to get their eyes checked because they don't have a door policy. Secondly, I get extremely claustrophobic, and my Alto experience was unbreathable to say the least. The lingering smell of hairy armpits and unwashed males was quite honestly disgusting. If hell was a place on Earth, it would be Alto. Its an embarrassment to the west end nightlife and to be frank, people that go to Alto need to get some taste in music, clothes, and attitude. I would strongly suggest all members to look up 'etiquette' in the dictionary. Finally, if you can't get into Alto, you shouldn't be allowed to socialise in Central London, maybe you should try Essex?
hey
just to say that we enjoyed ourselves so much at Alto last week end
yes its a private club with door policy (GL as anywhere else), but cool crowd, good sound /dj and loads to drink !!
We had a blast
but definately we'll b back
KEEP IT UP
miss A xx
Hey there, I dont get those reviewsyes its another private club with restricted access (gl but guys its like that everywhere!) but we had a great time out, good sound system, cool crowd, lots to drink. In short , I cant complain it was really cool. Will be back uring xmas break
Absolute rubbish unless your a member or are lucky enough to get in on guestlist. The staff are rude, the people who organise the guestlist pretend they will get you in but in reality you just stand in a massive que. Everyone must have ID or you will not get in. We were told that we would get in free because we were on guestlist but because we were in the que for so long, by the time we got to the front we were told it was £20 to get in.
If you are planning your night here make sure you have a back up place to go or you will be very disappointed.
First of all this is a members ONLY club, even if your on the guestlist there's no gaurentee that you will get in as they are very picky. Girls are free, Men pay £20. Personally I think the only reason I got in was because I was with a large group of people and the organiser of the night is a regular at this club so he got us a private table and free drinks all night which was GREAT! I had a fantastic time at Alto, the drinks are very expensive but it didn't really matter as all my drinks were anyway. The music was OK, I requested a few songs from the DJ but he refused as he said he was restricted to play a certain type of genre only (comercial r&b, dance, house). I know for a fact that if I went to Alto alone with a random friend I would have been denied entry as they like 'as few blacks as possible' at these type of clubs. So choose who you go with carefully!
Had an ok time at this club. Door staff are really nice aswel as bar staff BUT the club gets really really packed and the aircon system is just not enough for the amount of people in there. Drinks really really expensive so make sure you only go there month end!
Horrible club, horrible people, horrible staff, horrible music, horrible night for me...never again...
Alto rocks! Went there last weekend. Friday was so good I ended up there on saturday as well. Great music and very reasonably priced for a west end club. Can't believe Wolfie from Tramps was on the door, what a legend! The dj on the saxophone was awesome. Definitely my new hang out now.
Go there on Wednesday's when I can and always have a great night. Even better if you can manage to get yourself on a table. I'd recommend going.
Those who complain about the cost of a drink should not be going out. Unfortunetly this is not your local pub, drinks are £8-£10 but thats what most clubs are like up London.
I'd say get your mates, all chip in and get a table. Worth it for a one off night.
I had heard some good things about this club but in reality was very disappointed. Very over-priced for the quality of the night i received. Door staff very over-friendly which I did not appreciate and bar staff very under-friendly. It would appear they both need to take a leaf out of each others books. Music was ok but a bit sketchy at times and i did not find the atmosphere consistent. If you like to scrounge free drinks from the off-spring of successful business men then you will have a treat of a night. Other girls very rude and sadly way over their self-respectable limit.
Better balance than any other London club by far. Great mix of music, great table service, plenty of dance-floor space and a cool international mix of big spenders, hot women in designer and high-street gear side by side, recreational party-goers and even staff from the other clubs party there regularly.
Everyone always look like they're having fun. Not at all pretentious like Jalouse/Movida/Maddox etc. And not a grimy wannabe club that wont last. It's gotten better and better since it opened and I can see it getting better still. It has something to keep everyone in your group happy.
The guest-list promoters are only ones in London i know that really look after you and party with you if you want, not just let you in on their list and disappear. Only warning is if you don't personally know the door staff, look sharp and get there early to avoid being turned away at the door.
My daughter and three friends were put on the guestlist. They drove all the way from University in Portsmouth, paid a huge amount to park, and found the club closed when they arrived. A bouncer appeared and suggested they went away to a nearby bar for a drink. When they returned they found a long queue and were unable to get in as the bouncers told them the club was full. They were left outside, freezing cold. Apalling.
i went to alto last night, overall it was a nice club, nice layout and the bouncers were polite.
I felt the club was way too packed with too many people, and was not able to move.it was very irritating and i had alchohol all over me by the end of the night.
I was also very concerned at the fact that i was never asked for ID and my bag was not checked.
but over all it was ok.
Was at the club last saturday night and have to say I was surpised at how good the night was. The music was better than when I was there last and there seems to be some new staff who looked after us well.
Overall a good night out with no complaints. The Guy on the front door was excellent!
Not great at all.
I would generally agree with what everyone else is saying (except the people giving 5 stars).
Only thing I would add: the owner is a 40 year old guy living out a dream. He has to make a decision whether he wants to own a profitable nightclub or make a place for himself to pick up women by giving out free drinks. If the later is the goal, he sure is doing that part well.
If you look at all the comments left, everything comes down to fact that no one is really running the club because the owner is preoccupied elsewhere, so the staff are just running amuck.
Liked this place the 1st week they opened but went down hill quickly. Unless the owner has a lot of money, would suspect this place will be gone in 1-2 years (or turn into a really ghetto club that caters to people wearing trainers).
We had a fantastic night at Alto. The club is so glamourous and beautiful. The music was wicked and the staff were so friendly and polite.
Its nice to go to a club where there are so many good looking girls and guys.
Drink prices are comparible to other clubs in London.
Commendable customer service and we were very well looked after by our waitress.
I have been to this club twice, the first time was an unsuccessful attempt despite being on the guest list.
On the first occasion the bouncer told us to get into the guest list queue and then told the girl in-front of me to move over so he could check out my outfit to see if i was dressed good enough to get in.
I found this rather distasteful and after stalling on the doorman's part we were told that the guest list is now closed so we were turned away after nearly an hour of standing around in the cold.
On the second occasion me and my friend were on the guest list again and were let in without any problems so no complaints there, at least we got in. Once in the club the first thing i noticed were random girls standing in various places posing and giving other females snide looks.
Then much to my dismay an average vodka and orange costs £10.50. Then to make matters worse the DJ was beyond bad. i don't even know what genre i would place that horrendous pointless music in.
But the crowd was so stuck up (without reason i might add... they were nothing special to look at girls and guys were mostly unattractive anyway) that they probably wouldn't dance anyway!
Bouncers in absolutely every corner making you feel policed, but somewhat safe so if something did happen it would be stopped in a jiffy.
In terms of customer service, it was above average for a London club, the bar staff were incredibly friendly, and the second you put down a drink it is picked up. The Decor is also above average and absolutely beautiful, there is adequate seating and enough space to dance.
The toilets are beautiful and extremely clean, which is also a nice change for clubs in London. Overall experience was not bad but could have been much better if the crowd was more willing to party and there was better music.
I would never go to Alto, it is a terrible management an crab customer service. Even security are very intimidating.
Please do not waste your time and money unless you are very desperate.
OMG it was the worst place i have ever been in London this Saturday.
To start with people not nice in there, venue far away don't look like members club felt like I'm back at student times some underground club.
And most what shocked me was barmen who was so rude i couldn't believe my eyes. So when we came at the bar i asked for drink menu coz it was my first time in there.
Barmen gave me terrible look and throw at me the menu at same time saying that im not gonna find anything new or what i could want from it.
So that menu showed just bottle prices starting with 200 or 300 pounds.I asked how much moet bottle answer was 200 pounds bit to much any way we ordered 4 glasses of champagne no idea what kind it was so it costed 14 pound per glass strange but barmen asked for 66 i didn't realise at firs but anyway our friends who we joined at the club wanted to pay for it so he gave 80 ponds and was expecting for change.
But when he saw that barmen is not going to do so asked what happen to his change? Got the answer that barmen put it in the till and now he cant take it from there and that he can give him some drink for free insted. SHOCKING!!!!!
We went to Alto as a last resort as everywhere else was terrible.
There was no queue but as we approached the bouncer he asked if we were members, after saying we werent he asked to see ID where he continued to talk about how 'cute' we were (we're only 18) and showed all the other bouncers our pictures..slightly patronising.
After judging us and radioing down what sounded like 'two brunettes and a blonde' we were told two of us would go free but one had to pay.
We thought this was fair and headed down the stairs. As we went to pay the woman demanded 20 pounds from all of us, after arguing that the bouncer had said something completely different she radioed up and the previous 'nice' bouncer then decided we all had to pay once down there.
What a ploy! As it was getting to 3 we couldn't be bothered to go somewhere else, so paid to get in. The venue is alright, nothing special.
The only really great thing about this club is the music, absolutely fantastic playing things like dizzee rascal, little wayne and house of pain (perfect in my opinion).
But there is no dancefloor and my god what can I say about the people. The men are completely pervy (my friend was constantly groped) and the women..well..they all dance like and look like strippers, YUCK.
Overall, I wouldn't go here unless you were really desperate. Everyone is extremely unattractive and my vodka and coke cost £10.30, ridiculous.
The best way for me to review this club is by copying and pasting the letter I sent to their reservations manager.
You'll get the gist of it:I am very upset about what transpired last night. I find it hard to believe that your club, on the basis of dress, decided to turn away my guests and cancel my booking.
This was a “one off” occasion for me – my 30th birthday. As you know, I’d been planning it for weeks. I chose Alto as my celebration venue due to Kay’s recommendation – she’s a good friend and has looked after me since her day’s at Crystal; and due to the discussion you and I had when I came a few weeks back – I thought the place was extremely well designed and of course, you did a great job of convincing me that Alto was the place for me.
Given that this was a milestone occasion for me, I wanted to ensure that I would be celebrating with my closest family and friends. These are all people I respect and admire.
To give you a small indication of the efforts made, guests came from as far as Coventry and Essex, some even had to make special arrangements just to be there e.g. arrange babysitters, etc.
I had a good cross-section of guests from varying backgrounds but all the type of people I would trust alone in my home – such is their calibre. Now I don’t expect this to resonate with your General Manager simply due the nature of his job but I will say that for him to cancel such a big arrangement at the last minute and without any consultation with me (the Customer) is not only extremely rude but simply, bad business practice.
It seems these days, whenever a new club pops up in London they aim to extol a shallow veneer of exclusivity and do so with a superficial door policy that aims to disrespect and in cases such as mine, humiliate people. That’s a very bad model upon which to base your business.I will now spend the next few hours ringing/texting each of the 40 guests I’d invited to apologise...
ALTO is the best club in London, looks amazing and such a change to other members venues, the music is incredible... im back on saturday
Been there several times since its launch and have had a good night each time as have my guests.
I work in a bar and like to be able to catch up with people from our industry who all seem to gravitate to this bar and seem to enjoy it too!
Not to say that its boring, due to it's sheer size and concept you can always meet new people. Still some teething issues but that's part of the charm!
Love the huge bar, regardless of how packed it is you can always get a drink quickly and I think its the first bar not to blink when I asked for an Old Fashioned.
Am glad to see there are no probs with the hosts, security or staff, top bunch! Will def be back, stock up on the Woodford Reserve guys! Greg
Seriously, it is really really bad place . Don't go there unless you are desperate.
Very badly set up as the dance floor is on the way to the toilet and staff room so you get people try to get pass you every 2 secs.
Crowd are really not very nice to look at and DJ doesn't seem to know what he wants.
Even you get invited by your trusted event organiser same as I did, think twice as you won’t have a good time there.
Clearly the last 2 reviews were written by the same person and again most likely someone working for the club.
Went to Alto once and once was enough to realise this place will never be what it aspires to be which is a high end London nightspot.
I have been partying around the world for close to 8 years now, and these 6 months lifespan clubs are easy to spot.
No one recognisable goes was there, absolutely no beautiful women in this place and music was so bad even the DJ looked like he wanted to leave!
Please take it from the real reviewers "GIVE THIS PLACE A MISS OR GIVE IT TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!"
Being at the club over the weekend, I have to give credit where credit is due.
I thought this was one of the best nights out I have had in the last 8 months. The reason for putting my views forward is my friends told me to write a review as I have been going on about Alto all day.
When I saw the comments written to date the bad ones I couldn't believe it. Have you actually been to the club?
Did you actual see how the staff work and sample the music and hype in there? It was brilliant on Saturday and well done ALTO!
Keep doing what you do best, it was the best night for me for a long, long time....
Oh by the way, woolfie on the door is a master! Superb.....
Having been to the opening of this cub, I gave Alto and its staff the benefit of the doubt and returned tonight to see how the club had settled down.
Wow, they have got it right. The atmosphere was great, music was just right and the sound was good but not over bearing....
Upon entry we were greeted well by the door hosts, they didn't seem as flustered as they were on the opening night. Very courteous door staff as well.
The people in the club all were up for a good night and got it. Service was attentive and always with a smile.
I liked the place when I first saw it but having spent longer there tonight I WILL recommend Alto to my friends and to people who have been prior to now but didn't get what they were looking for.
Thank you to all the Alto staff, you gave me and my girlfriends a good night out...
This club is simply a Joke!! i didn't expect it to be so bad! my advice to ALTO would be demolish it and start again
Must say that of all the nightclubs I've been around the world this one must be one the the lowest, tackiest and less than hour later I was gone from this hellish club to never come.
Totally agree with the comments bellow mine minus the first one written, most probably, as someone mentioned by a member of the staff.
Must confess that even now, I'm not sure if the right address is Ganton St or Kindly St, since it is in a cross over in between the two streets.
Needless to say that location, location, location also does not apply to them.
Nothing against Soho, just walk few minutes towards Dean St, Wardour St and few other and you'll find by a long way far better places to entertain yourself than at horrendous Club Alto, whose staff are probably the rejects from Job seekers allowance and are doing charity service in a terrible bad mood.
Bad vibes everywhere my friend.Doubt, even if the likes of reality TV or "D" lists or would risk to lose they hardly earned minutes of fame in such a sleazy club.
Surely, they have more brains than that. We've wonderful nightclubs in London, swanky addresses and wonderful staff that genuine like they job and have wonderful people skill.
I wouldn't bother wasting any time or money going to Alto unless you're friends of promoters or management and are being lured into showing up with the offer of complimentary drinks, canapes and entry.
It is a grand disappointment. The venue lacks character and is distinctly unimpressive, despite the rumours from some that this venue was meant to provide a welcome change from what has become a dull experience in London's West End.
The opening night was an utter fiasco with the masses descending on the club, but hardly any sexy, beautiful people, and hordes of the usual West End club promoters and sleazy guys with their hanger-on or paid lady friends on tables.
Drinks were overpriced and the layout felt awkward. The DJ set consisted of the same tracks that are heard at most other average West End clubs - nothing cutting edge like the music in St Tropez, Ibiza, New York or Miami.
If you want to be at venues with a more exclusive and well heeled social network, Jalouse, Movida, Molton House, Maddox, Cuckoo are where you should be.
I expect this venue to be territory for reality TV stars, lapdancers, footballers and WAGs before long, if it isn't already the case.
I completely agree with HigherSights - this place is crap! Giving it one star is generous!
Inside is nothing special and it costs a fortune. But what makes it truly the worst club i have ever been to is the absolutely horrid staff.
I went for a birthday party there the other day, where they apparently refused entry to one of my friends but refused to explain why.
Her name was on the guestlist and the birthday boy (who actually works there himself!) was expecting her.
She had spent hours getting done up and looked stunning and was genuinely hurt because they were absolutely foul to her for no reason! The security guards are rude but the lady at the door was an absolute *****.
I love high class clubs but would never ever go back, especially since there are so many better clubs surrounding Alto.
The guy who wrote the first review must work for the club's PR agency.
I was at the opening party on Wed 1st July too with a large group of friends and don't know anyone that was remotely impressed.
It was the hottest day of the year and the night made a great start by the door bimbo telling us we couldn't wear t-shirts and "should make more effort next time" and wear a collared shirt!
They let us in anyway as we had a table. On entering the club it looked like a cheesy mix of a strip club (think Mayfair club on Dover St) and downstairs at Molton House but with even lower claustrophobic ceilings ... more 70s Miami than 1920s chic.
I couldn't' see any of this special decor they had apparently shipped in. The best parts of the night was the AC not working properly so it was hot and sweaty and the music cutting out every few minutes although I'm sure they fixed that now.
Layout of the club is a joke and creates bottlenecks around the dancefloor. Crowd was lot's of familiar London party promoters and playboys but not to the usual club opening standard of celebs and glitterati.
The icing on the cake is £15 for a whisky and coke at the bar which takes the mick for even a west end members bar.
Left after a couple of hours and won't be going back. With all the hype I'd expected much more from this place.
Give it a year or two tops before they rebrand it again. Time is a commodity in this city and we Londoners demand higher standards!
Went to the grand opening last night. Very classy place with great staff and decor. Definitely a notch above Movida and Jalous.
They appear to have recruited the best staff from various clubs as i saw a lot of familiar faces.
I will return this weekend for sure to check it out on a normal night. Rob C
