Forget the whole God is a DJ business, Londoners know that the finest DJs in the land are really simple folk at heart who just happen to know the capital inside out. Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about Andy Whitby but were too busy dancing to ask.
The DJ: Andy Whitby
The Club Night: Hard Nation
The Place: The End
The Dates: 14th December
The Music: House and techno
How did you get into DJing?I played basketball and the captain of my high school team asked me over to have a mixing session with him. I played on his decks for the first time and was hooked!
I never did it to play out though - that was never my intention. Originally I did it just for fun and to make mix tapes for my friends.
What makes your style of DJing unique?Every track I play I’ve edited or made myself. My mixing style of dropping tracks very early in the mix or playing only parts of tracks was something I pioneered in the hard dance world.
What do you do when you’re not DJing?I run my record label AWsum, plan events, and produce and maintain my Whitbywear clothing outlets.
What music do you listen to?I listen to a lot of hip-hop, a lot of fidget house and I like to dabble now and then with some Pendulum.
Who’s on your DJ dream team?Cally Gage, Klubfiller, Matt Lee, Tom Parr and MDA and Spherical; each offering something different for separate times of the evening.
What was the most expensive night you’ve ever enjoyed in London, and who was paying?I remember going out once a few years ago with some DJ friends and it all got a bit wild, we were drinking £14 cocktails like they were going out of business! We did it in turns of rounds and I had the brilliant plan of being near the end ensuring I was so drunk by then I’d not worry about spending the £98 each time!
And the cheapest?Luckily, being a DJ you rarely have to buy your own drinks, so most weekends in London I’ll never pay!
What’s your favourite festival?Global Gathering, definitely!
What’s the most unique venue in London in your opinion?KOKO. The design and colours of the interior are amazing - so alive and energetic, each time I step on that stage and look around I get a shiver down my spine; it’s incredible.
Describe your perfect day and night in London?Well, Camden is obviously a big favourite, as it has KOKO. There’s loads of nice bars (like Vinyl Cafe with the little record shop downstairs) and good places to eat.
