The ViewLondon Review
A maze of gorgeously decorated rooms, each offering a different atmosphere, with delicious drinks and unbelievably welcoming staff – Avalon is just what the doctor ordered.
The Venue
In a prime position on busy Shoreditch High Street, Avalon is easy to spot, although its sleek black exterior doesn’t give much away. As you walk through, you’ll find the main bar with plenty of space and soft, sultry lighting. The attractive bar has a spirits display that uses bright lighting to draw you in. Walk through to the VIP bar (pre-booking required) and you’ll find a sumptuously decorated space, with gorgeous deco-style furniture and private booth seating with your very own drapes – just pull them across and you’re totally secluded. There’s also a great space outside lined with sofas that is great for summer nights. Look out for the barbecue each weekend.
The Atmosphere
The main bar is full of noise and chatter, with lively club music that will certainly have you dancing by the end of the night. The VIP bar is more relaxed and laid back, but still full of people enjoying themselves. Outside you’ll find groups of people whiling away the night and, with everyone in such a good mood, it’s easy to get talking with those around you. The staff throughout Avalon are extremely hospitable and are more than happy to help you with drink choices and anything else you may need.
The Music
Each month Avalon hosts a number of events, from charity events to top DJs and live music. The music policy appears to have taken on a more crowd-pleasing angle in recent times (it has been taken over by new owners and reopened) and R&B, house and club classics are regularly on rotation.
The Drink
From cocktails to champagne, Avalon has it all. You can get two cocktails for £8 from the early evening cocktails list (from 7pm to 10pm) – try a Gluttony, with peach schnapps, vodka, orange and cranberry juice with a good squeeze of lime or a Wrath, which is a potent mix of Jack Daniel’s and amaretto, served over ice and topped with Coke. The main cocktail list offers cocktails at £9, with two for £15 and three for £20, so it makes sense to come in a group. Choose from favourites like the Porn Star Martini, with Absolut vanilla, passion fruit and lime or try something new like the Red Hot Pax – a moreish blend of Bacardi, Malibu, strawberry liqueur and pineapple juice. There’s a good selection of beers, wine and champagne, and plenty of people opt for buying a bottle of spirit – a great idea if you’ve reserved an area in VIP.
The Last Word
A stylish venue with a great atmosphere that offers something for everyone, Avalon will certainly not disappoint party groups looking for a big night out in Shoreditch.
