Want to check out the new musical sounds before they become mainstream? Head to Barfly. The VenueSituated on Chalk Farm Road in the heart of Camden, Barfly is close to both Camden Town and Chalk Farm Northern Line tube stations. From the outside it looks typically Camden – think dark, gloomy and pub-like, the two floors inside having a similar feel. Upstairs you'll find live music and bands playing, downstairs a bit of seating and a DJ popping out the latest tunes. On both floors the decor is raw and dirty, which keeps the live music real.
Barfly can't be criticised for trying too hard because, quite frankly, it hasn't tried at all, and despite being part of a chain of ten venues across the country, it's still pretty unique. At the weekend it gets pretty packed so expect to queue for the bar. Tickets for most nights are sold in advance, meaning you won't have to queue outside and it saves you a couple of quid, too.
The AtmosphereBarfly is filled with young, uber cool, music focused twentysomethings – think vintage clothing, skinny jeans and plenty of Converse trainers. Most of the clientele look like they’re in a band (and they probably are!). Don't be mistaken, however, this place isn't pretentious at all. The cool hipsters might look the part, but they're not the kind of people who are going to look you up and down if you're busting some crazy dance moves in front of the band.
The MusicBarfly has featured hundreds of bands since it opened in its former location in 1996. Coldplay, Oasis and Stereophonics are just some of the big bands that have played at the venue and, more recently, it’s played host to many new bands launching their first albums.
The venue also holds a variety of regular club nights, including the popular Casino Royal every first and third Saturday of the month, playing an eclectic mix of alternative music from the 1970s onwards, and Kill ‘Em All, a night of twisted indie and electro music. If you think of any type of music in the alternative category, there's probably a night at Barfly that caters for it.
The DrinkDon't expect much from Barfly in terms of drinks – in keeping with the general Camden feel, drinks are quite expensive and expect to pay about £6-£7 for a double spirit and mixer and £4 for a bottle. Most drinks are served in plastic cups, too; although this prevents any potential accidents whilst you're dancing or getting pushed around the venue.
The Last WordIn all, Barfly is carefree, hip and a great place to see the hottest new talent in a typically indie venue.
