Bartok specialises in classical music? No, it doesn't. Five friends and I trawled across London to Chalk Farm, in the hope of experiencing London's only classical music bar.
After much persuasion on my part that it would be worth the journey- we're all 20+ classical music fans - this venue sounded promising. We arrived around 9pm on Saturday evening, to be confronted with a blackboard advertising ‘Latin Funk’. Not much ‘classical’ in that we thought.
We ventured in to the bar, which is much like any other, and instantly our hearts sank as we heard the ubiquitous sounds of the Black Eyed Peas and Justin Timberlake. Not Classical (not even 'Latin Funk' come to mention it).
We were extremely disappointed, both because we spent over an hour travelling to a bar which turned out to be identical to dozens on our south London doorstep, but moreover because we had come in the exited hope of finding somewhere unique in London only to find it playing the sound same soundtrack you hear anywhere now.
I complained to one of the staff who informed me they only have 'classical music occasionally'. Don't think this really qualifies as 'specialising' in a musical style? On being proffered a flyer, I saw that none of the seven nights are down to playing classical music, apart from one that mixed classical/chillout (a Wednesday).
In short, very disappointing, not as advertised. I spy a large hole in the market?
