Beardyman Interview

Beardyman Interview

Beardyman has made himself something of a household name in recent years, winning the World Beatbox Championship two years running and being the current title holder.

Having performed with the likes of Groove Armada, Jazzy Jeff and Blondie, he’s highly rated as a bit of a beatboxing legend. We caught up with Beardyman to chat about his gig at the Turning Point Festival on 8th May at The Roundhouse, Camden.

The Performer: Beardyman
The Night: Turning Point Festival
The Place: The Roundhouse
The Dates: 8th May
The Music: Beatbox

How did you first get into music?
It was an accident really - or was it? I don’t know. I always played instruments: piano when I was five, viola in school, guitar, then drums and bass and stuff - and then a bit of music production. I only got into beatbox when I saw Rahzel play live and realised I had the same skill set.

What makes your act unique?
I always perform naked. And I'm at the forefront of looping technology.

What do you do in your down time?
Gardening, I play chess with my robot, and I eat cheese with crackers and fishpaste.

What music do you listen to?
All music. All music is beneficial for one reason or another.

If you could perform with any other artist, who would it be and why?
Paul Daniels so I could kick him in the face. Or, to be honest, I acheived a dream the other day when I played between Chaz and Dave and Square Pusher.

What was the most expensive night you've ever enjoyed in London? And who was paying?
I tend not to waste my hard-earned [cash] on such trivial and fleeting frivolities.

And the cheapest night out in London?
Any one where I'm playing and not paying.

What's your favourite festival?
Bestival.

What's the most unique venue in London in your opinion?
Turnmills… and now it’s gone.

Describe your perfect day and night in London?
Wake up, go to a cafe somewhere central, go to the Tower of London, masturbate in the gift shop. Cross to south side, visit all local butchers, buy meat, go home, fill bath with meat, have meat bath. Go out to Chinawhite, punch a celebrity, get arrested, spend night in cell.

Catch Beardyman performing at the Turning Point Festival at the Roundhouse on 8th May 2009.
