The ViewLondon Review
Nightclub meets house party at blagclub Notting Hill Gate. A small, funky club that meets your basic weekend needs.
The Venue
Bigger isn’t always better and blagclub proves this with their simple yet effective club. A few steps past Notting Hill Gate tube is where you’ll find it but walk quickly and you might miss the entrance as the door is discreet. Keep your eyes peeled for the queue outside.
Once past the doorman be prepared to navigate some rather steep and winding stairs to get to the club, which is located on the first floor. Upon walking into blagclub Notting Hill Gate you can’t help but feel like you’re walking into someone’s flat. The place is basically an extended room, housing a bar and DJ booth in the front area, dancefloor in the middle and lounge area in the back. The decor is simple with a splash of ethnic chic, including a Hindu god statue hanging from the ceiling and some interesting Hindu art on the walls. For those who tire themselves out on the dance floor, leather seats to lounge in can be found along the perimeter of the space.
The Atmosphere
The crowd at blagclub Notting Hill Gate is varied, it includes Notting Hill locals of all ages and young, stylish professionals. The atmosphere is very similar to one found at a house party - think happy dancing people, no attitude and free-flowing alcohol. Early birds (before 9pm) get free entry, otherwise the cover is £5. Members' cover is £3 and it’s free to sign up.
For those who want to keep partying after blagclub Notting Hill Gate has closed, the other blagclubs (in Ladbroke Grove and Holland Park) are open later and organised taxis will take you there for £5. It’s a shame this venue doesn’t match its siblings’ opening times.
The Music
Like the crowd, the music is eclectic if a little cheesy. Expect to hear everything from Britney Spears to Outkast and Dolly Parton. Different DJs play on weekend nights and Wednesday and Thursday nights host live acoustic acts.
The Drink
blagclub Notting Hill Gate has a decent selection of bevvies by the bottle and glass and the prices are kept reasonable. Basic spirits such as vodka, rum and whisky cost £4 for a single and £6 for a double. Premium brands and liqueurs are available, too. Bottled beers are £3.50 and include Stella, Corona and Grolsch. Wine is available for £4 a glass or £16 a bottle. Be prepared to wait for your drink as there is only one small bar and the crowd is big and thirsty.
The Last Word
blagclub Notting Hill Gate is smaller than the other venues in the group and it doesn't open as late. However, if an intimate and simple venue with a house party atmosphere is what you’re looking for then this is definitely a fun spot to drink, dance and be merry.
