Bobby Sanchez DJ Interview
Forget the whole God is a DJ business, Londoners know that the finest DJs in the land are really simple folk at heart who just happen to know the capital inside out. Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about Bobby Sanchez but were too busy dancing to ask.
The DJ: Bobby Sanchez
The Club Night: School Disco
The Place: Palace Music Hall
The Dates: 15th November
The Music: Disco
How did you get into DJing?I fell in love with mixing music (hip hop style) when I was 14 years old. Hip Hop back in the 1985 was fresh and new. My mum bought me 1xSL 1200 and a GLI mixer. DJs like Cash Money were cutting and mixing Tears for Fears records as well as old soul and jazz breaks. I loved mixing Elvis Hound Dog with LL Cool Jay Rock the Bells - try it, you'll understand!
From learning the art, it was a natural step to start DJing. As I had no cash I started doing mobile disco DJing; that was my biggest lesson in life. My soul was opened to the different styles of music people request, from a 50th wedding anniversary to an 18th birthday – two different styles of music. Amazing.
What makes your style of DJing unique?I am never scared to play ANY music and I’m a huge risk taker - freedom with no restriction. From a young age I was exposed African, Indian, classical and pop, so I never thought of music in categories, just good songs.
What do you do when you’re not DJing?I make music and then play it for my two sons.
What music do you listen to?I love soul music, but the key for me is any music that moves me, from Wonder and Gaye to ACDC. I tend to listen to music based on the writer and producer as well as the artist. One of my favourites is Quincy Jones.
Who’s on your DJ dream team?It would have to be those talented Hip Hop DJs from yesteryear. Grandmaster Flash, DJ Red Alert, Cool DJ Herc, Cash Money and Jazzy Jeff. The creators of modern day dance music.
What was the most expensive night you’ve ever enjoyed in London, and who was paying? The most expensive night was School Disco 2001 NYE Party at the London Arena - it cost over £250,000 to put on the show. Who paid? I did!
And the cheapest? The first ever School Disco event was in the basement of a restaurant with a budget of £450. We had to handwrite the flyers then photocopy them at Forest Hill library.
What’s your favourite festival?Guy Fawkes Night!
What’s the most unique venue in London in your opinion?Roundhouse.
