You would not imagine that this isolated house functions as a lively music venue visited by some of the biggest names in the industry. Brixton Jamm is a pleasant surprise.

The Venue
This isolated house in a quiet, roomy road makes you forget how congested London can be. Brixton Jamm has space for parking, outdoor seating and more than its fair share of customers.

The venue occupies the ground floor of this standalone property: most of the space is occupied by the pub area, whilst to the left of the building there’s a live music space. The club is DIY at its best: it’s quite clear that there’s a group of music enthusiasts pretty much running the whole thing. The furnishing is rather simple: high stools by the mosaic-encrusted bar, couches, and a few chairs and tables leaving plenty of space for standing. On the walls you’ll see a few large prints on canvas. It doesn’t look mint but it surely fulfills the purpose.

The Atmosphere
Self management is the rule at Brixton Jamm: a few guys in old jumpers are running the place like it was an extension of their own house (which it may well be!). It’s obvious that live music is held in high regard given the good sound system and lights. There’s even a disco ball for the more glittery performances.

The composition of the laid back crowd depends on the gig: certain nights see Brixton Jamm packed almost beyond capacity with fans, whilst other nights you’ll only find friends and family of the acts playing. Depending on what’s going on, expect to stand and queue at the bar or to sit comfortably and be served right away.

The Music
A mix of well established names and newcomers mingle on stage at Brixton Jamm. Acts like Bloc Party and Dirty Pretty Things have played here. XFM has held nights here but Indie rock is not the only genre you’ll find. There are also club nights with a selection of acid house, techno and electro to get people moving and breaks make regular appearances as well. Basically, you will find a bit of everything. Acts and DJs are carefully selected and the music is always of good quality.

Festivals are also held here – lasting from early in the day until well past midnight for 12 hours of uninterrupted great tunes.

The Drink
Music is the focus at Brixton Jamm so the drinks list is slightly neglected. You’ll find regular beers and spirits but not much else: expect Stella, Carlsberg and Strongbow. The bar staff are friendly but the most elaborate drinks they offer is rum and coke with a lime wedge. In the name of good music, you will have to give up pretentious drinking, which is the whole idea behind Brixton Jamm.

The Last Word
Select your night carefully and experience cool live music: don’t expect much glamour though, since Brixton Jamm is rock and roll (and dance and indie rock) in its purest form.
