Cagedbaby Interview

Cagedbaby Interview

Forget the whole God is a DJ business, Londoners know that the finest DJs in the land are really simple folk at heart who just happen to know the capital inside out. Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about Cagedbaby but were too busy dancing to ask.

The DJ: Cagedbaby
The Club Night: O2 Wireless Festival
The Place: Hyde Park
The Dates: 5th July
The Music: House, electro, techno

How did you get into DJing?
It came after heavy touring with the live band. It seemed a natural alternative and it just took me. I got deep into it, started to craft my sets and really research the music I wanted to play, and I kept getting asked back. Long live the DJ!

What makes your style of DJing unique?
Sometimes I go through 100 tracks or snippets in a set but I don’t mash up. I play a lot of my own tunes, productions and remixes. I scan all genres - hopefully smoothly - I wouldn’t bat an eyelid playing nu rave into deep French house, and I think the crowd appreciate it’s a journey when I play. Plus I like to entertain them.

What do you do when you’re not DJing?
I have just finished my second Cagedbaby album. I also do a lot of writing and production for other artists and I have a live band that I'm preparing to take out on the road next year. I eat good food, walk in the country, watch the Antiques Roadshow, listen to Radio 4 and take care of my cats!

What music do you listen to?
Lately I've been listening to loads of Weather Report, George Duke, Jan Hammer and Trevor Horn. There’s so much that I haven’t heard – I’m getting into Italo disco again and anything from 1982-84 strikes my bell accordingly.

Who’s on your DJ dream team?
Well, Kris Menace and Alan Braxxe who are playing Turnmills are a couple of my favourites, and Justin Acid Robertson has always inspired me. In fact, all my mates are playing at Turnmills - I can’t wait. Whoops, I think a bit of wee just came out!

What was the most expensive night you’ve ever enjoyed in London, and who was paying?
Well, I lost my wages at a gig at Canvas once! Everyone was playing, but I came on after Goldie Looking Chain - where are they now?

And the cheapest?
London, cheap? Are you kidding me? If my car isn’t robbed or clamped I'd be lucky. Sorry, that’s a bit unfair - true though!

What’s your favourite festival?
Ooh, good question! I am a festival head - I love Glastonbury in the sun, Bestival for a party, Bloom for the new – there are so many to mention! Can I be swanky? Well, the Big Day Out in Australia is my favourite one to date. Ooh and Fuji Rocks in Tokyo, oh and Benecassim! There are way too many to mention.

What’s the most unique venue in London in your opinion?
I really love Turnmills. I’ve always had the most amazing gigs there, from playing with Fatboy to the Chemicals and Armand Van Helden. I love rocking the main room - the system is mean in there. Proper London vibe - dark and messy, just like me.

Describe your perfect day and night in London?
I'm an East End cat. Checking out an art exhibition at Leonard Street or pictures on walls, dropping into Brick Lane to check the haircuts and get some new rags. I never go to Belgo's anymore but I love to have the moules and frites and dark beer, past the lock for a drink then onwards and downwards into chaos!

Cagedboy plays The O2 Wireless Festival on Saturday 5th July.
