I went to the Friday night Ceilidh Club at Cecil Sharp House and had the time of my life.

Hosted in an impressive 1930s building, the Ceilidh Club is very popular event with a youngish crowd.

I booked tickets online but some of my friends couldn't get in as they sold out on the night.

The atmosphere of the place is a bit church hall, with bright lighting in the main areas and tea and cakes on sale for those who don't fancy beer.

The bar is manned by very friendly staff - I was made to laugh at least twice by quips from a bearded barman.

The dancing really is a whole lot of fun. The music is very uplifting (I very much enjoyed a passing snippet of Smooth Criminal, expertly performed on the folk fiddle) and the directions for moves nice and clear.

Those uninitiated in Scottish dancing will have no problem getting the hang of it, but you're free to sit dances out if you're finding it a bit much.

Many of the dances involve moving round the room, so you get to dance with lots of other people.

There's a big cloakroom and spacious toilets, with lots of mirrors to check you're not about to drown in your own sweat (or anyone else's).

A great vibe and a fantastic change from the more typical type of London night out, Ceilidh Club will leave you feeling both exhausted and exhilarated.
