The ViewLondon Review
Cherry Jam opened with the involvement of Ben Watt (from Everything But The Girl) as a welcome antidote to all the colossal superclubs of the time, and provides a personable clubbing experience. The VenueCherry Jam is situated on Porchester Road, a short walk from Royal Oak tube station. You could be forgiven for walking straight past the discreet doorway if it wasn’t for the three large jars of cherries in the window, which is a very cute touch.
The moment you enter the club, you’re enveloped in a deep cherry colour from the light bouncing off the red painted walls. As you go downstairs, the cherry red continues giving the bar an intimate feel. There’s plenty of long, sofa-style seating all around the edge of the club to perch on when your feet get tired of dancing! There's also a slightly raised area at the back of the room with two large alcove booths – again in cherry red, providing an excellent private area for groups of 20, which the management will happily reserve for you on request.
Another unique touch are the specially designed light projections against one wall, which change frequently. The decor is mix-matched - some walls are painted red, others are bare stone, there are breeze blocks and red oriental tree design wallpaper, but it all works and makes for relaxing, cosy surroundings.
The AtmosphereYou’ll find Cherry Jam to be very laid back - whichever night you go. The bar staff are fast, friendly, flirty and up for a laugh, not to mention excellent at their job. Management are relaxed – anything goes as far as dress code, and the security are polite and helpful. The only problem is the club has a local feel to it and the clientele are quite cliquey, so it’s not really a great place if your intention is to mingle and meet new people.
The MusicThere are promotions galore at Cherry Jam on Fridays, including Hat Club, Simply Salatious and Pushca all hosting parties, but don’t worry if you haven’t checked out what’s on first as their in house DJ is also fab. He plays a good mix of funky vocal house with some more soulful beats thrown in for good measure, and they stick to their in-house DJs on Saturdays, playing anything from US Gospel to Electro.
You can hear live music or new DJ talent during the week so if you fancy your chances at spinning the decks, all they ask is you bring some friends along with you and book your own slot.
The DrinkThe cocktails are mixed well and come in at a reasonable price of £6.50-£7.50, and the whole bar area smells of fresh mint! An interesting cocktail that comes highly recommended is the Apple Crumble - a refreshing mixture of Bison Grass vodka, cinnamon and apple juice. You can really taste the cinnamon and the apple juice keeps it nice, light and sweet. Their classic caipirinha also has a great taste with the balance of fresh lime and rum just right.
Wine on offer range from a Chardonnay at £14 to a Pinot Grigio at £17.50, or if you’re feeling particularly flush they sell spirits by the bottle for a hefty price. You can also spoil yourself with a bottle of Crystal priced at £250. There are also decent beers to be had like Grolsch, Sol and Asahi.
The Last WordCherry Jam is definitely worth the trip, whether you’re local or not, especially on one of the promotion nights - just take a group of friends!
