The ViewLondon Review

Review byNeda Hashemi18/01/2008
Hidden down a tiny cobbled street in the City, Clause Bar is a chic, contemporary cocktail bar that is ideal for city slickers, and city slickers only.

The Venue
It seems Clause Bar has gone for a sophisticated simple look; grey walls and black granite bar with flashes of purple suede and cream leather to liven the colour palate. The bar has a classy vibe, but the decor seems rather monotonous and unimaginative. However, the open plan layout it well thought out, with small high tables for couples, large low leather seats for larger groups, and sexy booths for after hours drinking. And there’s even a little dancefloor just in case the customers loosen their ties, unbutton their top button and let their hair down.

The Atmosphere
Clause Bar is an ideal place to come and relax, but not too much as the moody lighting and gentle music is aimed to sooth, not excite. Customers quietly chat while sipping cocktails and nibbling elegant snacks. Business meetings take place, friends catch up, work buddies gossip: all of this happens yet the buzz never becomes more than a murmur. Leave enough time for a leisurely drink as service is extremely slow, especially if you are not dressed in a swish suit.

The Drink
A short but unique cocktail list will definitely tantalise your taste buds, and won’t harm your wallet too much as most cocktails are £5.95, which is veering on the cheaper side for posh London bars. Unique combinations are delicious such as Banoffee Martini, consisting of Absolut vanilla, butterscotch schnapps, banana liqueur, maple syrup and cream, giving a sweet, rich taste of heaven, and simple classics like the Cosmo and White Russian are also done well. With a wide selection of wines, mostly by the bottle, with prices ranging from £12.25 to £235, there is something to suit everyone’s budget and taste. It’s worth coming here for the happy hour for after work drinks between 5pm and 7pm, where you can get all cocktails for ridiculously cheap £3 and bottles of wine for half price, which in Central London is a lovely treat.

The Last word
Good drinks and smart venue, but Clause Bar can quickly start to feel a bit dull and bland.
