The ViewLondon Review
The Dalston Jazz Bar is something of an institution amongst the Hackney fraternity, but it has recently experienced a spate of publicity from free London newspapers and visiting Hollywood stars. If you’re in the borough and need to party into the early hours, the DJB is your only destination. The VenueTucked away in a street off Kingsland Road, Dalston Jazz Bar is easy to get to at any hour of the day or night. Locals love its cosy interior, leather sofas and laidback vibe – perfect for a cheeky weeknight cocktail or post-cinema night cap. Surprisingly, despite its large reputation, the comfort factor diminishes dramatically on Friday and Saturday nights when long queues form and the glass walls seep sweat from the dancing sardines within. That said, dancing in a small space does have its bonuses, particularly when the clientele are this attractive.
The AtmosphereAlthough there is not as much of a ‘dingy jazz bar’ vibe since the introduction of the smoking ban, the popularity of this place has not suffered. DJs reign at the Dalston Jazz Bar. Midweek visits are more relaxed, with table service and conversation-friendly decibel levels, but Fridays and Saturdays are strictly for the party people, when it stays open until late.
The DrinkGood selection of continental beers and excellent cocktails for around 5 pounds. You may be in for a long wait on busy nights, but you’ll probably meet some new friends along the way.
The MusicFrequented by Hackney trendsetters, Shoreditch clubbers and even the odd celebrity, the Dalston Jazz Bar is more like a house party than anything else. DJs spin an eclectic range of records, from funk and soul to 80s pop. Expect to dance, if only because there’s no room to do anything else.
The Last WordExcellent late night party spot with a lucky dip surprise element to every midweek visit. Expect to queue and expect to be crammed, but hey, if it’s good enough for Kirsten Dunst!
