The ViewLondon Review
Expect full-on Essex glitz and glamour at this established nightspot that’s frequented by the cast of a certain TV program…
The Venue
If you’ve ever watched The Only Way Is Essex, or TOWIE as it’s now know, you’ll have heard the name Funkymojoe’s mentioned regularly. This bar-cum-nightclub, situated in South Woodford, is one of the favourite haunts of the cast and their many followers. Previously known as the unscrupulous White Hart pub, this address had a chequered history to say the least. But since new management and name change came in, things are looking up for Funkymojoe’s.
With a full refurb completed a year or so ago, and tighter restrictions imposed on the club, it seems it’s finally settling down and making its mark in the Essex nightclub scene. From the outside, the venue still looks a bit pub-like and bland; however it’s evident once you step inside that the majority of the money has been spent on the interior. The club has a deep purple theme, with luxurious leather seating around the side, and one large bar directly opposite it. The DJ can be seen spinning his tunes on a raised platform, with a small dance floor directly underneath.
The Atmosphere
As with most Essex nightspots, the theme here is glitz, glamour and then a bit more glitz on top. Expect to see girls looking so orange you think they have OD’d on Sunny Delight, fake boobs, fake nails, and hair back-combed to within an inch of its life. The guys are similarly preened and can be seen strutting around the room checking out the talent. This scene will either make you want to book up a VIP table with champagne service, or run as fast as you can to catch the Central line. Despite their perfect looks, these Essex types certainly know how to get down and party and the dance floor will be heaving until closing time. Funky Mojoe’s run a couple of regular nights, including Back to the Old Skool on Fridays, and less frequent nights run by some of the TOWIE club promoters – expect these to be packed! The age limit is strictly over 21s.
The Music
Commercial dance, funky house, old skool classics and even a bit of UK garage are all thrown into the mix by the club’s resident DJs.
The Drink
Funkymojoe’s prides itself on being a cut above the local competition when it comes to quality alcohol. Expensive brands such as Grey Goose, Courvoisier and Cristal are the norm here, although all the common brands of spirits are also served. Three lager are available on draught but don’t expect any real ale. A bottle of the house wine here will set you back around £15.
The Last Word
It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you fancy putting on your false lashes and partying Essex-style, this is a good place to start.
