Forget the whole God is a DJ business, Londoners know that the finest DJs in the land are really simple folk at heart who just happen to know the capital inside out. Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about Graeme Lloyd but were too busy dancing to ask.
The DJ: Graeme Lloyd
The Club Night: The Gallery
The Place: Ministry of Sound
The Dates: 30th October 2009
The Music: House
How did you get into DJing?
I was actually a professional dancer working with acts like Robbie Williams and All Saints. I started hanging out with loads of DJs when I joined the dance group Strike (U Sure Do) and that’s when I got my first set of decks and never really looked back. I used to go to The Gallery at Turnmills and watch DJs like Tall Paul play, little did I know that a few years later I would be playing on the same line-up.
What makes your style of DJing unique?
I don’t think it’s about being unique, it’s more about being able to get the floor moving and playing music that people will enjoy and dance to. After all, it’s about the experience of the listener not all about the DJ. I think DJs can get too caught up in trying to be cool and forget to play good music.
What do you do when you’re not DJing?
Most of the time I am in the studio producing, I have a track that has just been released called Waveform out on Stripback records. Apart from that you will find me watching as much sport as I can find.
What music do you listen to?
I like a range of stuff - The Doors, The Stones, Lady GaGa and, of course, loads of dance music.
Who’s on your DJ dream team?
Tall Paul, Jerome Isma Aa and Gavin Mitchell.
What was the most expensive night you’ve ever enjoyed in London, and who was paying?
I think it would have to be dinner at the Oxo Tower - and I was paying!
And the cheapest?
I guess when I am playing as I don’t pay to get in and get free drinks.
What’s your favourite festival?
South West Four has grown and grown since the start and just keeps getting better. The line-ups are always huge and this year is no exception.
What’s the most unique venue in London in your opinion?
Ministry of Sound as it’s really the only place to see the top names on a regular basis. The Gallery on a Friday is my favourite - the line-ups are always well thought out and it’s where I play so I love it. You can catch me there in the Main Room on July 17th.
Describe your perfect day and night in London?
I would start with dinner at Baltic in Southwark for really great Polish food. My girlfriend’s family is from Poland and she introduced me to the food, which I love. Then it would be off to Ministry of Sound to DJ, rounded off with drinks in the upstairs bar at Ministry with some friends.
Graeme Lloyd plays The Gallery at Ministry of Sound on 30th October 2009.
