As an out of towner I always do my research before going out and had heard my friends say they loved Green Carnation so thought I'd give it a go despite the reviews regarding poor service.

Well to say I was surprised is an understatement not only was I greated at the door to the bar upstairs and shown to a seat my order was then taken and back with me in 5 mins flat even though it was fairly busy.

The girl who served me was charming and sweet and the cocktails (my fav was watermelon Martini) were amazing.

There were quite e few tables reserved for parties which I understand can be annoying but I asked how to book and they told me it was free of charge and just to call the venue when I was coming down next.

This place is great they had a pianist on the night I was there and have never seen anything like it before a group of grown men standing around the piano belting out show tunes, FUNNY.

Needless to say I shall be returning and have booked my birthday there in September.

Another year, another owner. When are people going to realise that this place is punching above its weight? The service has always been verging on abysmal. The drinks prices are extortionate, and that's before you've factored in tips (without which the service gets worse) and 50p for the universally-irritating toilet attendant (since when did we forget how to wash our own hands?).

I won't deny that the venue is opulent, and if it wasn't so pretentious it would actually be one of the more popular venues in Soho, but as it is it's trying to appeal to a target audience who have the choice of similar luxury at a lower price elsewhere.

Absolutely love this place! The friendliest staff in London, cheap drinks and beautiful interior. Cannot find any faults with this slick and stylish venue.

Think elegant, sophisticated and decadent. Went there last week and bumped into Tara Palmer Tomkinson and the guy from the Dolce advert. Beautiful people seem to swarm here. A must see!

Went to Green Carnation with a few friends on Friday and had a great time. The first floor looked fabulous, all references to Oscar Wild are great. Drink prices are fine. Did not like the toilet attendants. Met some great guys. We shall definitely pay an other visit very soon.

Went with the boys to see if this was any improvement on Element before it and Sanctuary before that, both of which incarnations were typified by great cocktails in nice-ish surroundings if you could bear the paint-dryingly slow service and up-its-own-ass arbitary roping off of areas for VIPs (for which read: the owner's friends).

Sure enough, Green Carnation offers very good - and very good value - cocktails in very pretty (if somewhat crepuscular) surroundings but is let down by - you guessed it - paint-dryingly slow service and up-its-own-ass arbitary roping off of areas for 'VIPs' (pretty much the entire upstairs area the night we went).

Astonishingly, only one wine for each of red, white and rose is offered by the glass, and the (bottles only) beer selection is extremely poor; no Sol or Corona people? Come on!

Go by all means for a couple of cocktails pre- or post-dinner, but this ceratinly ain't one to linger in for long. I'll be back for another of the excellent Martinis but not for the warmth of welcome or slickness of service that's for sure.
