A sprawling pub that seems to wish it was born a bar.

The Venue
Positioned on a corner of White Lion Street with original period windows, bold signage and a few pub benches outside on the street, Hobgoblin is certainly a sprawling venue. The inside is awash with dark woods spread across its two main areas, which are filled with a large wooden bar, some interesting etchings and plenty in the way of seating. They have also had a recent refurbishment, which has definitely freshened up the place, and now they offer an area where live bands can play. There’s a definite lounge-y feeling to the space, helped along by some nice sofa seating.

The Atmosphere
If Hobgoblin has been steadfast in its pub theme then it would be a great place for a drink. Unfortunately, with a late licence at weekends, when a DJ kicks out some pretty cheesy tunes, it all goes a bit awry. It’s not often busy enough to really get going after hours so it feels a little tacky and, well, try hard. If you pop in for a drink in the early evening or mid-week, however, when it’s all a lot calmer then it’s a decent spot for a beer. Also, they are making some effort now to include more trendy live music events and shake off their old image, so watch this space as it could start to gain more of a loyal following, which will have a definite positive affect on the atmosphere.

The Drink
As well as a couple of token bottles of wine and the usual selection of spirits and mixers, they do a decent choice of lagers and stouts like Carling and Guinness, as well as the more unusual Hobgoblin ale (see what they did there?) on draught, which is a nice touch.

The Last Word
Hobgoblin has the potential to up its game, if they can pitch it at the right level with their new live music events. Time will tell…
