Hook n Sling Interview

Forget the whole God is a DJ business, Londoners know that the finest DJs in the land are really simple folk at heart who just happen to know the capital inside out. Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about Hook n Sling but were too busy dancing to ask.

The DJ: Hook n Sling
The Club Night: Pacha Beyond
The Place: Pacha London
The Dates: 5th September
The Music: House, electro and techno

How did you get into DJing?
Actually with a CD player and an old belt drive turntable. Also, when I was at university I used to live in a shared house that threw its fair share of parties. At one party a guy was there who managed a bar in the middle of Sydney. He basically offered me a residency and I ended up playing there for about 12months.

What makes your style of DJing unique?
Probably the fact that at least a third of my sets are made up of my own material plus a lot of re-edits and bootlegs I create just for my sets.

What do you do when you’re not DJing?
Drink coffee.

What music do you listen to?
In the car right now I’m listening to Radiohead The Bends, Pink Floyd Wish you were here and the new N.E.R.D album.

Who’s on your DJ dream team?
Axwell, Martijn Ten Velden, Gabriel and Dresden, and Timo Mass.

What was the most expensive night you’ve ever enjoyed in London, and who was paying?
I once spent £400 on a stretched hummer for me and my friends one night when I was playing at The End. You could say I have a generous streak.

And the cheapest?
A £3 curry and Tesco beer.

What’s your favourite festival?
The Future Music Festival here in Oz, it was the first time I played it this year, alongside the Chems, Sanchez, Mark Knight, John Digweed and Shapeshifters. I even got escorted to my stage in a golf buggy. Good times.

What’s the most unique venue in London in your opinion?
Its closed now but I’d have to say The Key in Kings Cross.

Describe your perfect day and night in London?
Sketch for cocktails then Gilgamesh for dinner, then off to the Key (I wish it was still there, one of my favourite places I’ve played in London).

Hook n Sling plays Pacha Beyond on Friday 5th September.
