Japanese Popstars Interview
Forget the whole God is a DJ business, Londoners know that the finest DJs in the land are really simple folk at heart who just happen to know the capital inside out. Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about Japanese Popstars but were too busy dancing to ask.
The DJ: Japanese Popstars
The Club Night: O2 Wireless Festival
The Place: Hyde Park
The Dates: 5th July
The Music: Electro, Techno, House
How did you get into DJing?I blagged my way onto a few promo lists about ten years ago and was sent regular upfront records. I was then on tour in Oz at Hedrock Valley Beats and one of the promoters asked us to DJ for a bit before we played live. I had actually brought records with me (for whatever reason, I don't know?) so I ended up DJing to about 8,000 people going absolutely mental at a festival in Australia and it sort of started there!
What makes your style of DJing unique?I think the energy that we put into our shows and the fact that the three of us bounce off each other during the show. We really enjoy what we do and people tend see that reflected as we perform.
What do you do when you’re not DJing?Modelling: we are three full time models for Horse and Country magazine. Yup, we are the Zoolanders of the dance world. Gary’s even done some foot modelling for various sandal companies.
What music do you listen to?Everything and anything. At the minute, The Presets, Van She, Foo Fighters, Phil Collins, The Killers, Kasabian, Essential Duran Duran, and Midnight Juggernauts are on our tour bus constantly.
Who’s on your DJ dream team?I don't believe in dreams, they are myths created to scare children.
What was the most expensive night you’ve ever enjoyed in London, and who was paying?I don't know, London is always expensive and the more you drink the more you spend!
And the cheapest? There was never one!
What’s your favourite festival?Glastonbury or Electric Picnic (Ireland) - two epic festivals that have to be experienced to be believed!
What’s the most unique venue in London in your opinion? So far, I've only really been out at The End, The Key, Egg, The Social, Cargo and Fabric. Out of these I loved Fabric for its sheer size and legendary status. I also really enjoyed DJing at The End and thought the atmosphere was amazing!
Describe your perfect day and night in London.A few years back I had a perfect day in London. I spent a whole day in Camden Market just browsing, chilling out, drinking mulled wine and sitting in bars, buying dodgy retro clothes and second hand records with my lovely Fiancee on her birthday. Then we went to The Social on Little Portland Street to end the night perfectly.
