The ViewLondon Review
Not to be mistaken with celebrity magnet, Jewel Piccadilly, Jewel Covent Garden is a good looking club and bar with equally good looking people. The VenueJewel Covent Garden is handily located diagonally opposite The Porterhouse, one of Covent Garden’s premier pubs and a good pre-club drinking spot. After stumbling across the road and brushing yourself off (the bouncers are strict here, especially on the guys), you’ll enter a glittering main room complete with a bar to the front and a large set of chandeliers.
Despite the moderate facade, inside it’s a tardis, with a mezzanine of floors. The ground floor is for greeting and congregating with other revellers, while sipping cocktails by the bar. There is minimal seating in the form of high stools round the outer edge and a few tables sparsely strewn. There’s also an upstairs - it’s recommended you book this as it’s usually reserved and has the only comfortable seating - and a downstairs second bar and dancefloor. The lighting is dark and the decor brooding, with the light displays refracting off the mirrored walls. Each section has a name - The Bacchus Bar, which is aptly titled for a drinking establishment, being named in honour of the Roman God of wine. There’s also Crystal Bar, Blanca, Velvet Area and Long Bar.
The AtmosphereConsidering this is a pretty upmarket establishment, the atmosphere at Jewel is laid back and everyone looks to be having a good time - posers are kept to a minimum although guys might be a bit intimidated by some of the girls who look to be pretty high maintenance on the whole.
The staff are efficient and there are capable cocktail bar tenders. With a bit of banter they’re not rude like many in the area, which is a big draw. All in all, this is a good place to go clubbing thanks to the decent venue and party vibe.
The DrinkDisappointingly, there are no beers on draught, but then Jewel has more of a club philosophy when it comes to drinking. There are, however, an excellent selection of bottled beers/ciders, including Becks, Budweiser, Kronenbourg, Magners, Michelob, Kronenbourg Blanc and Sol - all for under £4 a bottle.
There’s also a great choice of cocktails - including premium cocktails for the connoisseur, offering change from a tenner and consisting of premium vodka like the French favourite Grey Goose. There’s an extensive range of martinis, classic and contemporary cocktails for around £8 each. The mojitos are particularly palatable and made with real mint and fresh ingredients - the same goes for all their cocktails and setting this apart from many clubs in the vicinity and numerous bars in the locality.
Alternatively, if you’re out with a group of mates then you can buy bottle of vodka - such as U’luvka Vodka for £135, which included four cans of Red Bulls and soft drinks for mixers. It may sound expensive, but for a group it’s well worth it.
The MusicMusic plays out throughout the sections of Jewel with a DJ booth downstairs by the dancefloor. There’s a cool mix of funky house and commercial dance with the occasional ‘classic’ JT or Kanye track thrown in for good measure. It’s all about tunes to ‘pull shapes’ to and whatever gets the dancefloor pumping as the evening wears on.
The Last WordNot as pretentious as many late night bars and clubs, Jewel is great for a hot night out with the opposite sex or cool club night with mates. Glitzy without the Z list celebs, most notably they pride themselves on only using fresh ingredients in their drinks, which surprisingly is quite rare for the majority of bars in London.
