The ViewLondon Review
With an enviable position on the King’s Road, this new club is, unsurprisingly, members only and comes with the obligatory premium bottles of spirits and champagne – including the premium prices. However, what the King’s club has managed, where other exclusive venues often fail, is to make their venue a lot of fun.
The Venue
Formerly Tuatara, King’s is located halfway down the stylish King’s Road. The outside is cool and understated (even the name isn’t on show), and it comes complete with the standard surly doorman and model-like girl holding a clipboard. However, as if to compensate for its clichéd exterior, as soon as you get past the rope you’re in a corridor with a fun multicoloured LED floor, leading you towards the main club.
The main club is, as expected, chic and stylish. The bar on the right hand side is good looking (as are the workers behind it), and tables set up with glasses are dotted around the edge of the room on a platform. Walking through this room leads to a grandiose staircase, on top of which is the Persian-themed bar. This has a much warmer feeling than downstairs and immediately you can sense that this is the place for drinks and conversation, while downstairs is for cutting shapes.
The roof terrace is a great feature, and it’s likely you’ll be more than happy sitting up here, smoker or otherwise. It is a long decked terrace - the Persian theme is continued here - and towards the back are wide wooden tables with benches and comfy cushions either side – brilliant for balmy evenings.
The Atmosphere
Arriving at the club is very much a love/hate thing. If you enjoy the exclusive feel and you're on the guest list then you’ll love it; otherwise, maybe not. But King’s makes it clear right from the onset that it is a members only venue, so if that’s not your kind of thing, you’ll want to head elsewhere. However, if you’re new to such a place, you may be pleasantly surprised. The clientele are primarily made up of guys in suits and well-groomed girls, but it does have a genuine, laid-back and friendly feel to it. It’s not worth arriving before 10:30pm (it doesn’t open until 10pm), but within the hour the dance floor will be packed.
The Music
The packed dance floor is kept that way by a selection of good dance music - commercial and funky house, even the odd bit of techno.
The Food
In fitting with the Persian theme (and because it’s a general crowd-pleaser) the food available is Lebanese snacks. A platter costs £55, serves four people and contains plenty of treats like hummus, falafel, grilled meats and salads.
The Drink
Cocktails are a speciality here, and even when the bar is packed (which it often will be) a lot of time will be taken into getting them just right. And it shows. The mojitos are great – very fresh with just the right amount of everything. Vodka, gin, whisky, bourbon, cognac, tequila and rum are sold by the bottle, and start at £150 for a 70cl bottle of Absolut vodka, stretching to £1750 for a 600cl bottle of Belvedere. Champagnes start at £90 for a Moet & Chandon but if someone else is paying and money is no object, Dom Perignon Vintage is £3000 a bottle.
The Last Word
A night at King’s comes with a hefty price tag, but it has all the ingredients for a great time and is a really good addition to King’s Road. If you want a night that is both refined and fun, give it a try.
