The ViewLondon Review
From its early life as The Camden Theatre, to it’s transformation into the Camden Palace, and subsequent transition to Koko, this ever popular club at the bottom of Camden High Street is still going strong. The Venue2004 saw a massive refurbishment of Camden Palace, and KOKO was born. Holding true to its history the decor inside has been brilliantly restored to embrace its past life as the Camden Theatre. There is a definite wow-factor when you walk inside - it could have been no more than a tacky theme club but Koko’s long and varied history gives its decor an authenticity by staying true to is theatrical roots. It’s a good size venue, but its lighting and the deep colours used inside provide a wonderfully intimate feel.
The AtmosphereKOKO is host to some very popular, lively club nights and acts. Their cheesier nights are unpretentious, fun and frivolous. With all that variety taking place under Koko’s roof in any one week, the clientele is as varied as its line up. Most of their nights tend to attract the younger and trendier of the Camden set. But on the whole, Koko has succeeded where other clubs of a similar calibre have failed - it’s managed to steer clear of attracting an overly pretentious crowd.
The MusicA real mix of music means that KOKO has built up a following of people with all music tastes. It hosts concerts for big acts such as Madonna, Coldplay and Babyshambles, has regular cheesy pop nights and, of course, has a great collection of alternative nights for which Koko is probably best known.
The DrinkThe drink prices are bordering on the expensive side for what’s on offer, which is just your standard fare of beer, wines and spirits.
The Last WordKOKO delivers night after night - expect great club nights, cool indie nights and well-known live acts.
