The ViewLondon Review
Hidden deep beneath the Ku Bar lies the Ku Klub – an intimate lounge bar and club that’d be great for a first date.
The Venue
Anyone who remembers Ku Klub in previous incarnations as The Polar Bear or West Central will be astounded by how much it has changed. Gone is the metal floor and flaking dark blue paint and in their place lies comfy leatherette sofas, low tables, soft mood lighting and expensive wallpaper. There’s also a lighting rig and lasers above the small dancefloor, and the club entrance has now been moved inside where it’s accessed through the first floor bar.
The downside is it’s a still a small space with a low ceiling, but if you’re wanting an intimate night out with someone hot or a bunch of close friends then this needn’t be a drawback.
The Atmosphere
The atmosphere at Ku Klub depends on the night, but is generally laid back with a crowd of young professionals shaking their gelled hair loose after work, meeting up pre-club, or just enjoying it as a night out in itself.
The Music
There are different theme nights on offer throughout the week at Ku Klub. On Mondays there’s karaoke at Ku Live hosted by the golden-tonsiled Dan Johnson - Mark from Westlife gave a recent surprise performance! The following evening is a chance to catch up with the gay girls at Ruby Tuesdays, where DJ Sandra D spins the pop and indie tunes and there’s a free strawberry chocolate fountain. Boogaloo Stu holds court with camp cabaret, silliness and quizzes at Shinky Shonky on Wednesdays– one remnant from the West Central days. On fortnightly Thursdays you can get down to commercial RnB from DJ Nick JT with Vibe. On Fridays Dusty O plays pop and commercial RnB at Ozone, Saturdays has a new rocket-fuelled dance night called Surge with DJs JC Christopher, Steven Geller and guests on rotation, whilst Sundays sees drag darling Lady Lloyd staging her poptastic Hit Factory.
The Drink
The drink menu at Ku Klub is the same as what’s on offer upstairs at Ku Bar. Watch out for the Bar 150 cheap drinks offer that runs Sunday-to-Thursday with many tipples costing £1.50 all night, including Bacardi, Malibu and Archers (with a mixer), Carlsberg, Strongbow, J20 and Tropicana.
The Last Word
Proving size doesn’t matter, the diminutive size of Ku Klub only serves to lend a VIP room feel to the place. Worth checking out, especially when the incredible drink promotions are on.
