The ViewLondon Review
Part of an international network of clubs, including Paris and Tokyo, Le Baron London is currently in residence at Embassy in Mayfair. Established by ultra-cool Parisian Andre Saraiva, this super-chic club adds a rock and roll vibe to London’s nightlife and has already attracted a starry crowd.
The Venue
You can find Le Baron London tucked in the back of Embassy, past Kitchen Joel Antunes restaurant. Padded olive doors open to expose a large, glaring neon sign that reads ‘Red White and Fucking Blue’ from artist Tracy Emin. The stairs lead down to the club and photographs of famous visitors to Le Baron adorn the walls. At the foot of the stairs a large phallic Mickey Mouse sits near a foosball table that gives a sort of adult youth-club vibe to the whole place. The room is one big black square with a bar running along half of one side. Mirrored columns throughout showcase thousands of small red LED lights whilst original art pieces (a nod to Saraiva’s background as an artist) and sparkly glitter balls decorate the venue. The DJ booth is housed next to a small stage area which can be set up for live performances (Kylie has already graced the stage).
The Atmosphere
With a discerning door policy and no entrance fee, guestlist or membership scheme in operation, it’s really a case of either being ‘in the know’ or getting hold of one of the selectively bestowed VIP pins in the shape of the club’s cult figure of a man in a top hat. If you do get in, you’ll find a fashionable, arty, good looking crowd sipping cocktails and trying not to appear bothered by any famous faces that slide in amongst them. Waitresses wear simple black attire, with hair bands with bows, and although there is table service there are no minimum table spends or reserved seating.
The Music
With a music programme curated by Cazal’s lead singer Phil Bush, DJs spin electro pop and underground tracks, with Tuesday being a predominately musician-lead night of either established or emerging artists playing in intimate surroundings. Other nights may feature DJs flown in from Paris, or even impromptu sets from some big names like Chromeo.
The Drink
Signature cocktails are priced at £14. Leading the way is Le Baron, an intoxicating blend of Belvedere vodka, strawberries and champagne. A bottle of Chiroc vodka costs £195, however a glass of Perrier Jouet is slightly less wallet-troubling at £12.
The Last Word
A Parisian delicacy has reached our shores. If you can negotiate the door you are in for treat.
