The ViewLondon Review
The only thing to warn you of its presence is the bouncer at the top of the stairs. Said to be the only establishment of its calibre outside Japan, Lucky Voice takes the pain out of public singing by confining performances to private ones.
The newest venture from Martha Lane-Fox and pals, it’s situated in the old Yo! Below, Soho, and is comprised of a labyrinthine series of basement booths.
A slick operation, each of the nine karaoke rooms are immaculately self-contained, with terracotta-coloured padded leather seating and walls, LCD touch-screen playlists, wireless microphones, adjustable plasma screens and lighting, songbooks, menus, air conditioning and call buttons for waitress service.
The two super-deluxe, cream-coloured VIP rooms are impressive, holding the added attractions of full karaoke prop boxes (think tambourines, wigs, inflatable guitars et al), their own loos and a concealed entrance leading directly down to the car park beneath.
The Japanese-influenced cocktail list is inspired: the Love Hotel almost set my heart alight with its mix of sake infused with peach juice and topped with chambord, served on the rocks.
Provided you choose your companions carefully, Lucky Voice, with its well-selected, 4,000 strong playlist, is a must for all experientialists out there.
