The ViewLondon Review
Some of the cheapest drinks in London make Moonlighting a favourite with students and those struggling in the throes of recession. It may not make it onto your must visit list but for a cheap night out, it’s hard to beat.
The Venue
Located along Greek Street, Moonlighting is made visible by the bright neon light of its name that emits its tacky glow in the darkness. It’s easily accessible, being a short stroll from Tottenham Court Road and Leicester Square tube stations.
Descending down the stairs, you’ll find a medium-sized room with the walls and various pillars adorned with an array of mirrors to create the illusion of more space. There’s a beautifully decorated bar to the left of the club that’s sparsely populated with stools, allowing a few customers to sit up to the bar. To the right of the room is a long seating area where most people who don’t want to dance can be found bobbing their heads to the music. The dance floor is found on a slightly raised platform and is usually packed with people - thank god for the new air conditioning system.
The Atmosphere
It used to get hot in Moonlighting, very hot. As more and more bargain hunters descended on the club, the few ceiling fans could barely cope with keeping the air cool. Luckily, they’ve sat up and taken notice, installing an air con system that seems to keep things more chilled.
The mostly young clubbers and students who regularly descend upon Moonlighting are a pretty laid back, casual bunch. Depending on how you like your music, you might find that it’s on the loud side and if you happen to be positioned next to the speakers by the dance floor you may be left with a ringing in your ears come bedtime.
The Music
Moonlighting has a variety of resident DJs, the most common being PnP Crew and Da Prezident who play mostly RnB, hip hop, soul, soca, reggae, raga, swing and bashment. The crowd are usually up for most of this music and there is always a large group of people on the dance floor. Perhaps their biggest night – at least with students – is Cheapskates every Wednesday when all drinks are just 80p against a soundtrack of indie, electro and retro tunes.
The Drink
Drinks are cheap, especially on the aforementioned Cheapskates night. Even on a normal club night you’ll struggle to pay more than a couple of quid for a tipple. No special care is given to mixing drinks here and they may not be the most consistent, but nobody seems to care. They also stock regular bottled beers coming in at less than £2.
The Last Word
Cheap is the buzzword at Moonlighting. If you are feeling the pinch but can’t bear another night in front of Eastenders then this is definitely a viable option, as long as you keep your expectations low.
