The ViewLondon Review
Don’t be fooled by the garish neon lights or metal entrance – once safely inside you’ll discover My Place is a diamond in the rough. The VenueA stone’s throw from Earls Court tube station, just off the row of busy shops and restaurants, sits this curious little bar; a separate entity from its sister hotel. Said to house at least 300 people (probably only applicable when devoid of all furniture) the room is dotted with stools and scattered with tables. There is a small raised stage against one wall, a long bar at another, and an unmarked dancefloor with DJ booth opposite. The walls themselves are licked with warm lilac and vanilla, and the lights in the back melt into different rainbow colours giving off a tropical-chic glow.
There’s a small entry free, a £1 cloakroom cost, clean restrooms, and a dimly lit VIP area, which is prettily encircled with dark leather sofas, a low table for two, and potted plants. The flexibility of My Place makes it ideal for theme nights and private hire. In any case, watch out for the killer-steep steps on the way in.
The AtmosphereOn most nights My Place is filled with guests from the adjoining hotel and foot-traffic off Earls Court Road – they’re casual, friendly people with nothing on their agenda except good wine and good conversation. The staff are young and unobtrusive, including the doorman, and appear to be on as much of a night out as you are. Jeans and trainers aren’t shunned here, the age restriction is over 18 but the faces you see are more likely to be over 21.
With the low ceiling and candles burning at every table, My Place has a tasteful, underground feel. It’s like you’re in on a little secret; subtle class made accessible. Before the club scene erupts at 11pm it has a mellow vibe, particularly when there’s a live music performance. Thereafter you can expect a swelled crowd at a higher tempo.
The MusicYour DJ in residence will throw out a mainstream cacophony of classic pop, dance, funky house, hip hop and RnB – the exact combination is dependent on which night you turn up. However, a more cultural start to your night is in place here every Friday with a line up of contemporary jazz musicians invited to perform centre stage at Jazzfly – it’s quite the treat!
The DrinkYou’ll get change from a fiver with pretty much any beer or glass of wine that you order, which means this could turn out to be quite the cheap-tipsy kind of night! There is no cocktail menu but the smiley barman will gladly mix one of the classics off the cuff at £6 or £7. Champers excluded, the early end of the week boasts a happy hour that will see you taking advantage of any bevvy two for ones.
The Last WordPerfect for the carefree and casual reveller, that phrase: “Come back to My Place?” has never sounded so tempting!
