The worst night ever. There was a long queue for the "open buffet" which was just very badly prepared salad and some sandwiches. I and my wife and many other even did not have any chance to get food as the bowls were empty after 10 minutes. Club itself is also rubbish, so DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY, it is really not worth at all even though you book "CHEAP" groupon deals...
I was bought tickets as a surprise birthday present from my daughter, didn't know what to expect...
The club was only a short walk from Barbican tube station which was handy as it was raining pretty hard.
The venue is intimate but very quirky, comics on the walls etc. The food for the evening was sushi, I don't usually eat sushi but it was actually very tasty.
Two comedians followed after the food, a charming young man from the west country and a very witty australian woman.
There was a jazz trio playing later on in the evening, very talented bunch of guys.
All in all a good night.
Went here for a live gig and was not disappointed. Great sound, attentive staff and a fantastic atmosphere. 10 out of 10!
went here with the Groupon discount, wasn't expecting alot with the dicounted price even though full price should of been around £110 for two people.
arrived and went downstairs into a small cellar room, their was no one in the the cloakroom to take coats, so people were throwing them on to the chair, the service on the bar was slow and they seemed unprepared for the nights service.
in the Corner was a pile of plastic boxes with sandwiches and some bowels of pasta and salad. this was meant to be the 'high end' buffet that is promised on the deal and their website!
the only saving grace of the night was the comedy with a couple of good acts then followed by an average band.
the cost is only just justafiable when bought through the groupon deal, if i had paid the full price i would of been very disapointed with the service and food that was on offer.
Got there a bit late and the buffet only had vegetarian and fish options. No one brought out more food or anything.
The fist comedian was alright.
second comedian (had to look her up, her names Sarah Kendall) was pretty funny.
The cover band were really good playing songs from Blink 182, offspring, vines, jet and other similar.
There was a nice atmosphere and staff where friendly enough. You could tell they were making money on drink prices.
From the outside you wouldn't expect much from Native Tongue. It's just behind Barbican tube station on the rather nondescript Long Lane. Enter down cellar steps and into an art-house bar where you encounter a sudden change in vibe from the rather grey environs of the surrounding area.
The first thing that struck me - lovely lighting, and a great sound (there was a band playing at the time I went in). It helped that it was a great band making a great sound, but nonetheless Native Tongue has made a thoroughly good job of putting in a decent sound and light system. There's nothing worse than going to a live music venue to enjoy an evening's entertainment only to encounter a shoddy setup with a muffled muddy sound. I've had a little bit of experience doing sound engineering myself, and I could really tell these guys knew what they were doing. It's a refreshing change to find a venue that promotes itself as a place that nurtures new talent and that actually follows through by delivering a quality environment for performers and audience.
A short walk to the bar and a further pleasant surprise was in store... Drinks are at normal pub prices - extremely reasonable pub prices at that - rather than the over-priced over-pretentious other establishments you can find around the area.
The night I attended was an event called "Stop Look Listen", which believe is a monthly night. I don't normally go for 'acoustic' nights as I'm an old Rocker at heart, but there was something captivating and imaginative and new that got me hooked. I only intended on staying for one drink and then moving on to meet some friends elsewhere. In the end I called my friends and got them to come to Native Tongue instead!
The final winning point for me was the great atmosphere. The audience was actually sitting and listening, enjoying the music. You could hear every word from the singer's mouth. The place was pretty full mind you. But there are few live music venues in London li
