The Venue
Around the corner from Old Street tube station is Platinum, a little bundle of fun. Concealed but easy enough to find, the reward upon discovery is truly gratifying. Double doors with heavily tinted windows yield to reveal a plush, ambient room with an inviting bar. With beautiful contemporary floral dark walls of purples and blacks and posh leather sofas lining the walls, the club’s small dimensions are instantly forgivable.

The club has four floors and dimly lit staircases lead you to four similarly sized rooms. Luxurious leather sofas await you on every floor and in each room there are subtle differences in the decor. But there is one theme that pervades the entire club. Various black and white canvases of Playboy Bunnies circa 1969 serve as an understated and classy reminder of what the venue has to offer during the week. The club also offers a function room that can be hired out in advance.

The Atmosphere
East London is home to a diverse and eclectic range of people and this is reflected at Platinum. The clientele are slightly more concentrated however. You can expect to find everyone from senior undergraduates to businessmen in their thirties. With a couple of friendly but no-nonsense bouncers at the door to ensure that your impetus is to have a good time, there is no attitude and there are no problems.

Their motto is ‘no alarms and no surprises please’. Bouncers want to know that, for the guys, their clothes are as smooth as possible with no bulky or sharp bits. They also want to know that there is nothing else in girls’ bags other than lipstick and mascara. Back inside, staff at the bar are polite and accommodating and always ready to serve up drinks with a smile.

The Music
On a weeknight, sounds emanating from the club vary from electro to deep house to chillout beats to accompany house lap dancers. This is carried over to Saturdays but minus the buxom ladies and plus the techno and ‘booty bass’. In a nutshell, no pop - hurrah! Regular DJs at Platinum include NishNish Allstars, Hannah Holland, Raymundo Rodriguez and Nico De Ceglia and loads more throughout the night. Entry is £10 and justified by the fact that you get a lot of choice for your money. Look out for flyers nonetheless that will get you money off which is always a good thing. Entry fee discounts are also granted with NUS cards.

The Drink
Platinum’s all-inviting, all-encompassing bars are perhaps your best allies of the night. With spirits and mixers from £4, you really can’t go wrong. The rest of the bars offers are as simple and reasonably-priced so no cocktails here. This is not a problem though as there are multiple alternatives to satisfy any tastebud and quench any thirst. So whether you like your beers affordable or you are a sensible juice-drinking designated driver, you won’t be complaining about what the bar has to offer you.

The Last Word
Simplicity is such an understated virtue and Platinum really shows you how to turn something small into something big.
