God. What a dump. This place is so gross. Vomit covered stairs. Piss all over the toilet. Pimply teenage boys crashing around trying to find their first shag. Doorman just laughed when I complained about the gulf between the listings and the reality. Apparently it's owned by some old Brick Lane curry shop bloke. Decor should have been a giant clue....But I guess if you want to be fried alive this is a good place to go. It's in a tiny converted public lavatory. Lots of drugs. No separate fire exit.
1. The toilets are disgusting (something you'd think they'd manage to excel on considering the venue's previous use). If you manage to make your way through the puddles of wee on the floor and seats then you can take comfort in the fact that there's plenty of toilet roll; if you fancy peeling it off the floor or fishing it out of the overflowing clogged bowl that is. This sorry state of affairs was just before 10pm, and it didn't improve as the night went on.2. Perhaps this was only on the particular night that I attended, but there was definitely an attitude. By this I mean, "you've just squeezed past me, and I'm not pleased at all, and I might go a little crazy". There's limited space in the venue as it is, without all of those big egos cramming in.3. The bar staff were friendly, but the same cannot be said for the door staff. When I left the bouncer decided it was appropriate to make sarcastic comments about how proud my mother would be. It was quite early, and I was walking as opposed to staggering (a bit tame really!), but this is completely besides the point when the fact is that the customers he's insulting are paying his wages. I don't expect everyone to approve of how I socialise, but if I pay to get into a club then I certainly expect to be treated like the paying customer that I am. Enough said.4. Drinks are way over-priced; even for London standards. £4 for a vodka. It's the same somewhere like Matter where you're guaranteed a fantastic night with clean toilets, frendly staff and clean toilets. Maybe they should give you a free square of loo roll with every drink to make up for it?!5. Despite all of this, if you don't mind a bit of grime and are drunk enough to be oblivious to the bad bits then I think you'll probably have a pretty good time. I certainly didn't hate it, but then I do enjoy a bit of a dirty underground rave. If this isn't your thing then it's definitely a no go.
Revolting place. Ex public lavatory owned by a Brick Lane curry shop entrepreneur, it would probably have been more welcoming had it remained a toilet. Stuffed full of wasted punters. Be aware no fire escape - you will find yourself underground in a cramped concrete bunker so enter at your own risk
I've heard a lot about Public Life & all the comments were good.
We thought we'd try it out on Saturday (Bank holiday weekend).
During the day was good and the people friendly although not that busy which was fine with us (still hanging from the night before...).
We then went on to a few bars and little something to eat.Later that evening we passed Public Life again and could hear the music pumping out.
We decided to go in and what a night we had!! Not sure of who organises / promotes it but the night is called Relentless which plays Deep House & Techno.
This was one of the best nights we've had for House / Techno music and the DJ's were class. The staff are also really friendly and relaxed.
Come the end of the night, the last DJ finished up and everybody (and I mean everybody......) was chanting "one more tune, one more tune" so not to disappoint, he played a few more.
None of us wanted to leave but if you get a chance to go, I highly recommend it.
Also, if anyone knows who does the Relentless night, please let me know.
Im at public life almost every Saturday for the daytime party held there between 10.30am to 5pm. This place is small and not much to look at, so dont come to public life if you want to get all dressed up and look attractive. On the other hand, if you want to listen to some of the best, banging, underground techno from some of londons best up and coming dj's (and every now and then they have some BIG names playing as well) then make a visit down to Public Life. This place smashes it every week. There is nothing better to do anywhere else on Saturdays. Never any fighting, door staff are tops and you will always be welcome. :)
I went to Public Life one sunday night a few weeks ago and the atmosphere was brilliant. Everyone was really friendly and the drinks were really reasonably priced for london. Funky house and electro. Public Life is small, intimate and not fancy in decor - not for those looking for a super-club, but I will definitely be going again.
Had a big night at Public Life. It's a great after match venue that plays mostly house. Good old school dance music with lots of electronica and a bit of techno thrown in. Public Life has got a good bar - it's easy to get to and get rounds of drinks in. Give Public Life a go. It's got the beef!
