Set in the heart of Chelsea and a stone's throw from Lott's Road location wise Public ticks the box. After this however, I find myself painfully searching for positives.
I have read the reviews below and a consistent theme appears to be the presence of 'horrifically pretentious, skull-numbing, spoiled brats'. Although I would not put it so crassly, I would probably qualify in the same public school, wealthy family bla bla bla bracket. That little social background out the way, you will understand it's relevance when I tell you that the clientele is the least of Public's problems.
The door girls are as stunningly incompetent as they are good looking. The bouncers are as typically bold and stubborn as any club. The drinks are poorly made and unoriginal. How hard is it to make a good Mojito? I've had better out of a tap in Swansea. We bought a table only to find that the obligatory 15% service charge was payable on top of the minimum spend. This isn't America, if the incompetent, rude, Australian gap year student spills a table of drinks on my jacket, I don't think I should be 'obliged' to tip him! The music is truly awful. I think I heard Empire State of Mind 4 times, that was overplayed in 2009, I thought that God-awful song had been shot in the head and buried for good along with Harold Shipman? Service as a whole is poor. The staff are generally impolite and unconcerned. Even the girls aren't the attractive, voluptuous, stereotypical public school girls you might expect. Rather, a kettle of suburban wannabes in desperate search of their footballer boyfriend who will allow them to ascend to 'the good-life'.
Public is painful. Painful to write about because of the memories it conjures up. But more importantly painful to be inside of and have to experience until it's closure at the not soon enough time of quarter to 3. Schadenfreude notwithstanding, I would not wish to put you through such an experience.
I give it 1 star for sheer persistence.
Went here a few weeks ago on a Saturday and had a great night. The music was fun, the DJ was good and played tracks from Craig David, Britney Spears, Empire of the Sun, MGMT, etc- typical pop dancey tracks for undiscerning drunk party goers. I'm female and I went with just one other girlfriend, we had no problems getting in and paid ten quid cover each at the door. I probably wouldn't bother bringing my boyfriend or guy mates here as the three blokes in front of us even with a girl seemed to have some issue after getting in at the point of payment..But for a night out with the girls, its a good venue. The crowd were friendly enough, mostly so interested in themselves not to bother annoying other people which suits me. I think if you're trying to get in with a big mixed gender group, you'll have a more difficult time by the sounds of other reviews. But if you're girls, you dress the part, and are nice to the door staff- no problems. Drinks were horrendously priced as expected, about 9 pounds for a vodka lemonade. Would definitely go again.
Regularly out in the West End and heard a few things about this place so went the other week. No issue getting in as arrived early. For somewhere touted as being 'trendy' it's basically the same crowd as Embargos but moved forward a few years. Good bar service, disgustingly busy main room, unnecessarily pretentious crowd (get a grip kids- if you had any real money/class you'd be out in Mayfair) and some of the worst bouncers in London. Shall happily never be going again!
This preposterous posing palace for the dandies of Kings Road is only worth a visit if you are interested in studying the correlation between disposable income and arrogance. The door policy seemed arbitrary with 80% of the queue rejected but a good lie will get you in, as we discovered.
Some very good looking young ladies and a lot sloaney chaps peacocking around in suit jackets and boating blazers. Reasonable priced drinks but the real action seemed to be in the toilets where on five separate trips the cubicles seemed to have two people in them for some unbeknown reason.
Was hilarious watching people having their sparkler studded buckets of champagne and 2 litre bottles of vodka (wow, not even I could skull that) delivered to their tables, then seeing the same twits stood there at the end of the night looking clearly upset at their lack of entourage.
Music was ok and the dancers in bikinis fit in nicely with the rest of the pretention.
Upmarket Naff
We had a good night out in Public last night, spoiled only by the power crazed door staff and bouncer - both of whom saw fit to treat us like second-class citizens for no reason other than because they could. This kind of behaviour never fails to shock me - 'what's this - a mixed group of ten professionals want to spend a lot of money in our club? Right, that's it - we had better um and arr about whether there are too many of them while they stand around like mugs. We should also look down our noses at them and get overly officious when one dares to smoke to distract themselves from the nightmare that is our queue. Then, if they do eventually come out of the club later, we must rudely demand that they cross the street and walk away from the direction of their car.' The other annoyance was that some of the people in there were still getting served when they were clearly too drunk. This meant that there were some real twats (you know the kind) shoving everyone around on the packed dance floor, spilling their drinks on you - or worse, spilling your drink on you- generally having no spacial awareness and being very rude - slurring obscenities of the worst kind if you made it clear that they were very annoying etc. Other than that, the decor was very pleasing, the crowd was friendly and although the guy who served us was slow, he was polite - trust me, I always take note of these things. The music was an eclectic mix of popular, upbeat tunes to keep you returning to the dance floor, with a few old skool classics thrown in for good measure. Overall - a good night but could have been better.
Great club, friendly staff and always a good night out! Drinks are not as pricey as you would expect for a Kings Road club and they do a great range of cocktails. Fab place for people watching and you never know you might in come across the Made In Chelsea cast.
The below reveiws are a load of crap, if you plan to go to Public, do what everyone else does and get there early in order to get in and make sure you look the part.
If you don't get in then Embargos is also a great night out - but they do let more people in that Public so can very busy!
i wouldn't waste my time. just awful.
I totally agree with all the previous reviews. PUBLIC would be ok. If it wasn't for the rude staff, obnoxious crowd and rubbish music. So just the key elements to any good club. I went with friends for a friends birthday. We got to the club at 11 and queued, and as we approached the door woman we let her know our group had been separated by a group of 3 guys. She said thats fine so half of us entered and paid the £15 entry (£15!). She then let in the guys behind us but not the rest of our friends saying she had closed the queue to non guest list. No amount of explaining the situation would make her let our 4 friends in(despite the club being empty and 'guest list (i. E. Friends)' being let in. So they had to leave (despite 3 having flown over from Munich to celebrate the birthday). Needless to say this ruined the birthday. I will never go to PUBLIC again and I urge any onewho wants to enjoy a fun night with their friends to go elsewhere.
I have been to most of the London nightclubs. This is perhaps the worst. Just poor in every way. The staff set new standards in rudeness, the cocktails showed no trace of alcohol. Have some self respect and go elsewhere.
DO NOT GO TO THIS CLUB. Absolutely VILE staff, no concept of service, was asked to cross over the busy road and wait on the other side whilst I was waiting outside (away from the entrance) to meet some friends. When I didn't do this I was informed that I would not be allowed to enter and this was a 'done deal' The attitude of the imbecile on the door of this nightclub really did ruin the evening, I have never been spoken to like that in my life.
Not a good club. Have been a few times but have also witnessed groups of friends that have been turned away. The woman on the door is an absolute moron. Used the same excuse on two separate occasions that '' the owner has taken your table''. Turning down the people she did was just plain and simple bad business. Don't waste your time, far better places to go in London on a Saturday night. Even embargoes next door you are guaranteed a great night.
We tried to get in to the club at 1am, 3 girls and one guy. Just before us they let in 2 guys, and after 5 minutes waiting, something happenned, i guess they weren't happy with us, because we were giggling, and they told us that they can't let us in if we don't have a table. Well, we weren't insisting anyway, in the end of the day it is not the first time when i experienced b.tchy attitude of another NIGHT DOOR QUEEN. If that made her feel better, let be it! her time is at the door in a nighttime, and i have a proper full time good paid job, i understand her frustration. :-) Good luck!
This place is hopeless. A friend was leaving town and chose Public for her leaving party - booked a table, arranged minimum spend, arrived early... Firstly we were told we hadn't booked - a quick flick of the blackberry uncovered that bare faced lie. We were then given some story about the drinks sponsors wanting our table and there being no other available - the power crazed door lady offered to try to book us a table at another venue but didn't actually move to do this, nor did the club offer to pay for the cab to where ever this magical club would be.
All this took 30 mins and as we deliberated over what to do, the guy behind us started trying to push through our (all female) group to get to the front. When I explained to the 6ft+ guy that we were speaking with the door lady and he would need to wait the girl he was with began whimpering 'I have never waited this long for anything in my life before'. Clearly frustrated by the situation we explained the wait and that pushing through was not an option, only for the spoilt brat to try to grab at us and had to be held back by the guys in her group. This is the kind of person they let in.
The entire club is hugely pretentious and full of complete twats. The door staff are rude and unhelpful and their admin is terrible. Why was there no flexibility in the table planning? If one table is taken there should have been a contingency, not for the unlucky (or maybe lucky) group to be told to leave.
I wouldn't ever go back here, and would also prefer not to go to any of the owners other clubs. We did end up in Embargoes next door, which was fun, but was still annoying to be lining the same owners pockets with my hard earned cash when he employs such useless staff to run his over priced clubs.
We had an awful experience here last week. The bouncers were extremely rude and on ego trips, kicking up a fuss over people who were over 21 but under 22 - a most petty and pedantic rule that only seemed to be enforced on an ad hoc basis. We were treated like cattle on the street, forced to cross the road if we even took one step out of the queue. Despite being on the guestlist, only half the guests eventually entered the club. The atmosphere and club cannot really compensate for the behaviour of its staff.
I turned up for a friend's birthday at Public last week, we had a table booking but were made to wait for ages outside. An absolutely vile blonde on the door was being rude to everyone and making no effort whatsoever to get things moving quickly. She was talking to everyone like they were scum and at one point told someone to shut up when he asked how much longer the wait would be! When we eventually got in it was a pretty good night but definitely not worth the wait. Don't believe the hype.
Absolute joke of venue. Please do not waste your time and go. Booked a table to seat about 15 people two months in advance for my birthday to be told the day before the price has increased by a further £200. Finally, the price was agreed and confirmed. Turned up on the night with about 30-40 guests to find my table was now no longer available! No explanation, just no longer available. Great way to start a night. Then found out friends who had been queuing outside could not get in. The reason, "i had exceeded my table allowance". Guests who just wanted entry, to pay entrance and be in the club, turned away. Staff were rude, clueless and unhelpful. Do not waste your time. Even inside the club isn't great. Far far better venues across London.
Disgraceful. Do not go to this club.
Booked a table for 20 people for my birthday. Recieved an email before the night to say that they had forgotten to confirm my booking and we had to take a worse table. not the end of the world.
turned up on the evening and the woman on the door said -
"the owner of the club has decided he wants your table so unfortunately you don't have a table anymore'.
so i said ok, what can we do.
she said "nothing go away"
considering i had people from all over the country to for the night, a bit of respect would have been useful. plus i had 2 family members who are well-known premiership footballers with me, so hopefully there reputation spreads.
do not go to publc unless you want to be treated like scum.
go to embargos next door. very friendly, had a great time.
Door staff are the best in London, they have to knock back literally hundreds of people every night but do it as best they can. V impressive.
Well, comparing it to any of the big names (mahiki, vendome, aura, jalouse). That aren't strictly members only, PUBLIC- as it just opened still got the most 'real' Chelsea, Belgravia, Knightsbridge sort of croud. Lots of PUBLIC school boys tho who exceed their alcohol levels way beyond. We were able to get a table that got free, by arriving at 1am, -bottle of Champagne 60 pounds- super fair price. Music was just everything you would expect it to be, from a bit of 'mahiki style' to Electronic, Rap, Rnb to 'classics'. Go as soon as possible, whilst its still a rising star and before the mainstream takes over xxx
Best Nightclub to open in London in years..My only criticism was it may have got slightly too busy. But thank goodness we arrived at 10pm because when I went to get my friends in at 11pm there must have been at least 800 people queueing to get in. Beautiful crowd, reasonably priced drinks..Me and my friends had a table and the table service was of the standard of the west end! I have not seen this in Chelsea. Can't wait to go back!
