Scarlett Etienne Interview
Forget the whole God is a DJ business, Londoners know that the finest DJs in the land are really simple folk at heart who just happen to know the capital inside out. Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about Scarlett Etienne but were too busy dancing to ask.
The DJ: Scarlett Etienne
The Club Night: South West Four
The Place: Clapham Common
The Dates: 29th August
The Music: House
How did you get into DJing?
I was listening to Danny Tenaglia one night at Twilo in New York when I had a eureka moment. I thought to myself, “I could do this!” Although when I started, it was only a hobby and I never imagined that it would become my life!
What makes your style of DJing unique?
I keep the blinders down and don't really pay much attention to what other people are doing. I just do what I like, really. If I feel like playing Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” at the end of the night then I do it.
What do you do when you’re not DJing?
When I'm not DJing, I'm a rock star. When I'm not a rock star I'm a pop star! Every day is music, music, music. In my free time, I'm never bored as I live in London and there are so many great things to do here.
What music do you listen to?
Madonna, Lady GaGa, Nirvana, Beck, Vivaldi, Bishi (amazing London artist, check her out), PJ Harvey, Elton John, Beyonce, Depeche Mode, Grace Jones, Tori Amos, Superchunk, The Cure, Fiona Apple, Pam Hogg, Billie Holiday, Kraftwerk, Tom Waits, Fad Gadget and The Cranes.
Who’s on your DJ dream team?
If I could put on my own dance festival, my ideal line-up would be… Main Stage: Danny Tenaglia, Sasha and Digweed, Marques Wyatt, Gabriel Ananda (live). Stage 1 (hosted by Kubicle): Jamie Jones, Derren Smart, Dinky, Dyed Sondorom, Pier Bucci (live), Marco Carola. Stage 2: Mark Ronson, Siouxsie Sioux vs Pam Hogg, Joan Rivers (live MC) (ha!!) and then I'd probably have a stage with live acts like The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT and Grace Jones. Weird, I know.
What was the most expensive night you’ve ever enjoyed in London, and who was paying?
My most expensive nights out have been just outside of London (Fat Duck, Babington House), but the most expensive night out must have been having a room at St Martins Lane Hotel, a grand tier box at the Royal Opera House to see Carmen (I absolutely love the ballet and opera at ROH, it's such a sensual experience), dinner at The Boxwood Cafe and Champagne at Windows of the World. Was I paying? What do you think?
And the cheapest?
Probably dinner at Nandos and a night out at Reeperbahn in Shoreditch - it's a monthly free party with hands down the most quality crowd of people in London. Everyone there always looks fabulous and the music is really unique - underground synth pop, electro, new wave, 80s and all that. Very fun and very interesting.
What’s your favourite festival?
You should probably ask me that at the end the summer, but I'll likely say SW4!
What’s the most unique venue in London in your opinion?
Sketch is pretty cool as a drinks venue. The toilets are like the pods on Mork and Mindy! Don't bother with the food though. For music I think Somerset House is a very unique venue, I've seen Lemonjelly there. It's strange going to a gig where the Tax Man works!
Describe your perfect day and night in London?
I'd start the day with Bikram Yoga North, followed by breakfast at the Wolseley. Then I'd take the tube to South Bank to have a stroll around the Tate Modern, then get back on the tube to catch a short lie-around in the sun in Regents Park whilst listening to Miles Davis on my iPod. I would Lunch at Peyton and Byrne at the British Library followed by gazing at the original music scores in the Treasures of the BL by Handel and Mozart. At about 3pm I would have Fashion Tea at the Berkeley Hotel - they make little biscuits modeled after the season's runway collections! Nothing is tastier than a YSL basket shoe cookie! After feeling inspired by edible couture I would make my way to Harvey Nichols to diminish my finances at McQueen and Christian Louboutin.
If I'm feeling rather broke afterwards then dinner at Wahaca in Covent Garden is always very cheap and very good - all the ingredients are locally sourced and sustainable! I would then head back East to the rooftop bar at the Boundary to have a Dirty Martini (the food downstairs is also to die for - best Dover Sole I've had in my life). To finish the evening and to work off the ridiculous amount of food I have consumed on my perfect London day, I would have a little dance at Disco Bloodbath or Horsemeat Disco, and if I'm really going for a marathon dance-a-thon I'd probably head to Matter. Yes, it's worth the journey. And of course I'll stop at Umut 2000 in Dalston for a quail kebab on my way home. Can you tell I love London?
