The ViewLondon Review
A ten-minute walk from East Croydon station, it might be small and, as yet, relatively unknown, but Shooshh, despite its name, is a club to shout about.
The Venue
Having just opened last month, Shooshh bills itself as the hottest new club to hit south London. And to be honest, you can’t really argue with them. At 10pm, there’s already a huge queue of eager clubbers wanting to beat the clock and make it through the doors before Shooshh slaps on a reasonable £5 entry charge.
Heading up the stairs you’ll get the impression this is a monster of a club (think: Oceana proportions), but once you make it to the dancefloor you’ll find a far more intimate, manageable space where you can survey all your surroundings within seconds, and immediately lock down a perching space for your party. Despite its modest proportions, there’s no doubting Shooshh wants to help you have the best night out you can – this is evident from the sheer quantity of bars. Glance around and almost every wall is occupied by a fully staffed bar, so you won’t be spending your whole night queuing for a drink. There’s a regular spot to order regular old drinks, plus a separate, raised cocktail bar as well as the VIP bar tucked behind ropes. Here you’ll find an area reserved for bookings, with booths, luminous flashing tables and ice buckets.
The Atmosphere
The place is crawling with staff, so service is fast and you’ll feel safe too. Boys will approve of the barmaid’s uniforms – essentially knickers and a corset – and if you’re lucky enough to sit in the VIP area, you can sit back while they bring you drinks laden with sparklers.
The Music
The music is a (very loud) mix of mainstream dance classics and chart R&B, and the clientele are mostly young, student types. In the early hours, the dance floor is rife with groups of girls dancing and giggling, and sprinklings of young men eyeing up, sorry, taking in their surroundings. Funnily enough, in comparison to some popular south London venues, Shooshh doesn’t feel sleazy or grimy; it feels quite stylish, relaxed and electric, without trying too hard.
The Drink
You’ll find all the usual suspects behind one of the many bars – bottles of beer (£3.50), wine (£3 a glass), spirits with mixers (£3) – but also delicious cocktails for around £5 each.
The Last Word
If you’re after a fun night out with friends in Croydon, you can’t go wrong with Shooshh. Free or cheap entry, excellent service and easy-to-dance-to music in a clean, laid back venue - it's a great combination.
