Part of the same international group as the legendary supperclub in Amsterdam, this west London outpost, on the former site of Neighbourhood, has established itself since it opened a couple of years ago, and it continues to offer a tantalising and titillating mix of risque entertainment, DJs and dining on beds.

The Venue
As it’s located down a residential street under The Westway, there’s a certain hush-hush factor about this venue, although there is nothing shy or speakeasy about the sign supperclub announces itself with. Inside, you initially enter a bar area, a shiny red box-shaped space which is just the right size for the amount of guests sitting down for dinner. After a couple of drinks, you are let into the main room, shortly before 8.30pm if you’re here for an evening sitting. The space is entirely white, from the floor to the walls to the massive beds occupying the whole perimeter of the room. The best spot is opposite the main door, but the mezzanine level also gives you a good view and it has its own bar. The few tables located at the corners of the sizeable central dance floor/stage are prime real estate too, but expect to interact with the acts more than you might like here.

The Atmosphere
Supperclub is famous for providing risqué entertainment but that does not come until later. The international staff emanate a great energy: everyone is exquisitely polite and keen to please; their interaction reminiscent of a playful family. Surprisingly, there is little mingling between customers but supperclub is a popular destination for birthdays so many people come in groups. The background house music adds a sexy edge to the cool space but also hinders conversation as it’s quite loud.

To see any of the action you will have to wait until after your starter. Once the performers finally arrive, they are gone in a flash. Supperclub goes against trend: most other clubs of this ilk allow the entertainers plenty of time on stage, although here you have the added novelty of dining on a bed. As for the acts, they are a mixed bag: the man in drag is entertaining but not exactly groundbreaking, while the neo-burlesque dancer clad fully (including the face) in a sweet cream latex costume with red dots is more unusual and titillating – the act includes inflatable breasts and genitals.

The Music
Once dinner is over and the live acts are done, it is time to dance. The music of choice is house. The dance floor is fairly big and the sound system more than satisfactory, so the only element missing is a good DJ, which supperclub provides in style. Many famous names have taken over the booth, including Danny Rampling and Daddy G from Massive Attack. Rampling even has his own residency here and he’s been around since this venue was known as Subterranea (that’s a very long time).

The Food
There isn’t a menu to speak of (supper is billed at a flat £45), so there is an element of surprise. Dishes vary but the satay soup, aromatic and indulgent, is one of their staples, together with stuffed portobello mushroom served with asparagus on a bed of salad and delicious marinated artichokes. Everything is well-presented, including the tasty salmon with potato salad, a dish that’s ideal to hold with one hand while lying on the bed. The food itself is good, although it lacks slightly in the originality you might expect from such an interesting venue. For dessert, the chocolate éclair is indulgent but the freshness of the fruit salad is amazing so you may want to opt for this instead.

The Drink
The bar offers a short but enticing selection of cocktails (£9-£12). Names are often loaded with innuendo as in the case of the Show Girl or the French Kiss champagne cocktail. And yes, you may even find an oyster swimming in your shooter. Once lying down for dinner, you can pick from over forty bottles of wine. You can treat yourself with prized and pricy bottles going for as much as £120-£190, but also settle for the reasonably priced house white and red (£19). The obvious alternative is champagne. There are forty bottles on offer, from £64 up to a mind-blowing £5000.

The Last Word
Supperclub has firmly established itself in this part of town. A few tweaks in the formula would be welcome but this remains a place you want to see, taste and experience - at least once.
