You can find A Lounge, a friendly, buzzing bar full of good staff, good food and lots and lots of whisky, buried beneath Trafalgar Square.

The Venue
Unless you work in the area, or you’re a tourist checking out Nelson's Column, you probably wouldn’t think of going for a drink around Trafalgar Square. But hidden beneath Albannach restaurant is a charming, quirky cocktail bar complete with DJs and delicious food. Enter through the upstairs restaurant and, greeted by the fancy door staff, you might feel a little of place, particularly if you’re coming for a quick after-work drink, or just to catch a live band. But downstairs is another story. The décor is funky and, for want of a better word, sexy, with plush soft sofas and yellow leather furnishings. Arches and exposed brickwork remind you that you’re underground and makes you feel as though you’ve discovered a bit of a secret hideout, something that’s always welcome in a busy area like this.

When you enter, expect a big crowd at the bar, even on a week night. But thanks to the speedy – and friendly – staff, you won’t be waiting long for service. There’s a DJ playing chilled music in the background, and there are often live jazz bands playing on Thursday evenings. If you’re after a bit more privacy, there are several gorgeous ‘vaults’, where groups (or couples) can still enjoy the music and atmosphere but get a bit more space to themselves.

The Atmosphere
Given the location, it’s a nice surprise that The A Lounge is not a tourist trap, nor is it filled with suits. The clientele are generally late 20s to early 30s, who mostly attend in small groups. The atmosphere is laid back but there’s a buzz and, particularly when there’s a band due on, you feel as though you’re waiting for something exciting to happen. Great for a romantic date (if you can grab a vault; always wise to book) and after-work drinks if you’re local.

The Food
Bar snacks and canapés are on offer, and you really should try at least one if you get the chance. It’s worth keeping an eye out for the delicious sweet peppers stuffed with feta cheese, tasty chipolatas and smoked trout pate crostinis (all £6.50).

The Drink
This is predominantly a whisky bar, and boy do they love their whisky. The staff are not only terribly helpful but know their stuff too. Ask them for a recommendation and they’re happy to teach you just why each whisky is so special. It’s not all whisky though, so don’t worry if you’re not a fan. Delicious (and strong) cocktails include the Venezuelan Moscito with Santa Teresa Gran Reserva rum, mint and orange for £7.50 and the fruity Pear Sour, with Crème de Peche and a nice helping of pear slices lining the glass. If you do like whisky, you’ll be in heaven – and you’ll be amazed at how different each type tastes.

The Last Word
Don't be put off by the busy location or the crowded bar - service is quick, food is delicious and, if you're a whisky fan, you'll be in your element.
